Even the nominal joke characters in Guardians have some pretty fucked up histories. Drax's wife and children get killed; that's his entire motivation. Rocket has baggage from being a science experiment.
Guardians, without a doubt, has more light-hearted moments in it. But it definitely also has some pretty dark shit that people are willing to ignore because of the Dance Of Bro meme.
