Those are where convolusion lies, but for the most part treat shared universe cape comics like Marvel or DC the way you would, say, James Bond or Sherlock Holmes. Serialized fiction utilizing the same character concepts, but with different writers and different situations and such.
Like, you can just pick up any old series you feel like reading for the most part and be just fine with it. Pay attention to who the writer is, because generally writers on a book will be telling their own stories with beginnings, middles, and end. May take place within a set number of issues of a farther-outstretching title, but you don't really need to worry about that.
For example, let's say you really want to read Swamp Thing. One of the best places to look would be Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, which is issues #20-64. There are more issues in that volume, but those are Alan Moore's, and those tell Alan Moore's story.
The important thing to remember is that what makes the story worth reading are the creative talents involved. A character is nothing without the writer and artist telling their story.
