If he were incompetent, the retcon would have been him going "oh fuck, I pissed myself, give me a second I need to go change my costume." It wasn't. He finished his scene like a professional.

The point isn't that pissing makes him incompetent. It's something awkward that happened to him while he was being dramatic, so that contrast is funny. But it doesn't actually detract from how well he pulled it off. If anything, it shows how well he worked under pressure when things went wrong. Anyone who's ever had to perform live can relate, though obviously not to the specifics.

If it was simply an attempt to humanize him, he wouldn't have made him retroactively piss himself during one of his most iconic scenes.
