At first, after the events of Return of the Jedi, Palpatine's Grand Vizer tried to keep order. He failed horribly, a bunch of high-ranking Imperials defected and carved out their own little empires and the Empire's head of intelligence staged a coup.
Then the Rebels came, conquered the Empire's capital planet and one by one kicked out all of the imperial warlords from the core.
Then an Imperial supergenius showed up and waged a pretty succesful campaign for a bit until he got assassinated by his own bodyguard. It's a long (and pretty good) story.
Suddenly, the cloned Emperor shows up out of nowhere and gathers all Imperial forces, both the actual ones and the Warlords under his banner. He does some shit and then gets permanently killed. Whatever's left of the Empire at this point goes back to Warlording in the Outer Rim and their leaders spend all their time fighting among each other for petty reasons.
A few years later, Han stumbles upon a secret Imperial superweapon facility that's been out of touch for a while. Upon hearing that the Empire's been in shambles for a while, their commander goes on a PMS-fuelled rampage and gets her shit kicked in.
Horribly beaten, she fucks off to the Outer Rim and tries to get all the Warlords under a single banner. She accomplishes this by gassing all of the Warlords and taking control of their forces. She then goes on another PMS-fuelled rampage again and gets her shit kicked in horribly again. Realizing she's kind of bad at this, she relinquishes her position to her second-in-command.
Her second-in-command continues the war for a bit but after a few key losses and a loss of motivation sues for peace. Ever since then, the Empire hangs around as a seperate faction coëxisting peacefully with the rest of the galaxy.
Until the comic that takes place 100 years later or something and the Empire took control of the galaxy for the few days until the Sith launched a coup.
So no, they never go away for good.
