Tumblr (the shit parts at least) is no different than cults and extremists.
There's this researcher named Robert Jay Lifton. Done a fuckton of work with extremist groups and thought reform (read: brainwashing).
His process of thought reform fits with the tumblr mentality of bringing in teens perfectly. But more importantly, his concept of Totalism is constantly at play.
Totalism, to Lifton, is when the people in the group tie themselves to a set of beliefs (i.e. the bible or quran) and mold their sense of self off of it.
Anything that breaks from that self is thus deemed as dangerous and MUST be removed by any means.
