I used to read the old paperbacks of the early Peanuts strips (those from the 1950s and 1960s) when I was a kid and my overwhelming impression was that it was a pretty sad affair all around, at least with regards to Charlie Brown.
Then again, I suppose the fact that Charlie Brown keeps soldiering on, despite his pretty shitty social life, could give some readers cause for optimism.
