>>77047168>Why is the dub bad? They Americanized the dialogue a bit too much in translation, so a lot of the over the top speeches characters give loose their flair and fall kind of flat. The voice acting doesn't capture the characters at all. It's not really a surprise that they couldn't find anyone who could talk the way Kamina does in the original, it's kind of rooted in Japanese culture all the way back to Kabuki. The over the top expressiveness of the voice and poses is something that just isn't part of our culture, so instead dubbed Kamina comes of like a nasally kid trying to pretend to be cool.
Then there's Viral. He's a character who doesn't really say what he's thinking or feeling, so nuance is really important. You have to read between the lines with him sometimes. They just don't capture this in the dub where so much dialogue is paraphrased to fit the mouth movements in English. He also has this really raspy low voice that sounds very hostile and feral, and in battle his tone goes high reflecting the intensity of a moment. The Japanese VA for Viral is really good at doing the grunts, breathing, and battle shouts, where as the dub leaves a lot of that out or sounds just plain wimpy. His dub voice sounds kind of foppish and snooty. It reminds me of James from Pokemon, if he were to try too hard to sound intimidating.
Then there's Leron. He had this really androgynous flirty voice to fit his androgynous looks and flirty personality. In the dub they give him this wacky flamer gay voice and dialogue and completely ruined some of his jokes.
These are the most glaring flaws of the dub. I would recommend viewing it as it was originally intended to get the most out of it. I'm by no means one of those anime snobs who hate all dubs, I prefer Cowboy Beebop dubbed for example. But I am picky, and am really glad I watched the fan sub first.
