Apparently AoSTH was initially supposed to be a prequel to SatAM, and something happened in-between that caused Robotnik to take a level in badass and conquer the world. However, the SatAM episode "Blast to the past" threw this idea out the window.

If they went through with this, it probably would've been the biggest turnaround for any villain ever.
