It didn't really feel satisfying to me. it was just "humans are dead muties are alive whoopie"
It was appropriate to the comic, but at the same time it felt dumb.

Cavemen weren't wiped out in mass via plague or struck down by god.
They gradually became modern humans, and even early human species had interbreeding to some degrees.
