From what I heard several of the show's creators took the side of the teenage girl that tried to kill herself (a shocking standpoint!) with the basis of "it's fanart, people can draw the characters however they want because people draw whatever they want to draw."

Everyone on tumblr took that "draw what they want" part and twisted it into "he must be a supporter of child porn" and blasted twitter with it.
