I was forbidden from watching it as child.
So I suppose you're certainly not alone in feeling that way. It was pretty intense at times.
No worse than Billy and Mandy or Zim for the most part though.

The only cartoon my parents never let me watch was Billy and Mandy. I don't really blame them because when I watched it as an adult I could easily see why it might not be suitable for young kids.

Courage has alot of tone and atmosphere for a cartoon.

Maybe having the location being in a isolated part of nowhere works to its advantage.
