Killing Zod is unambiguously good. Superman himself believes that it was unambiguously good. People are only uncomfortable because it's not triumphant. If he smashed Zod into the ground a few times and delivered a quip, no-one would care if Zod stopped breathing. Perhaps if he kicked Zod into a well.

Honestly there wasn't any dramatic scene in this movie that I felt was well written. It was grim dark superman done completely wrong.

I went back and checked the end fight, and here is a complete list of things Superman destroys:

-An empty, ruined building at ground zero.
-Some girders atop an empty building under construction.
-The facade on one side of a building. I guess there's some falling glass that may have hit something.
-The glass skylight on a subway station, and a decorative archway inside.
-Zod's neck.

Literally everything else is destroyed by Zod.

Meanwhile, here is a rough list of things destroyed in Avengers:

-Stark blows up ~10 alien ships over the tower. Debris rains down in all directions.
-Stark tricks an alien ship into plowing into the side of a skyscraper.
-Black Widow blows up another ten or so ships, by firing at them with a gatling gun. Explosions are close to the street, and more flaming debris falls.
-After Loki hits their jet, Hawkeye steers it into a crowded street/plaza for the crash landing. A dozen people are seen fleeing. (I'll count this as a grey area.)
-Stark blows up the first space whale with a missile, even though it appears to already be dead. Flaming debris is shown raining down on civilians.
-Cap tells Hulk to smash. Several buildings' facades are destroyed, and two alien ships are blown up over the city.

-Thor blows up ~20 ships and a space whale, over the city. Literal tons of flaming debris goes flying everywhere.

-Hulk smashes through a crowded office building, steers a space whale into smashing into another office building. People are showered with broken glass.
-Two or three more ships destroyed by Stark over the city.
-Thor crashes the third space whale into a building full of people.
-Hawkeye blows up Loki's ship. More flaming debris.
-Stark blows up another space whale with about ten high-explosive rockets.
-Nuking the alien mothership causes a fourth space whale to land on top of a building. Another ships flying around presumably also crash, but that's not shown.
-Hulk rips up a building's facade while rescuing Stark, even though Thor was already on the way.

It's something like 60-70 car-sized ships - and four plane-sized space whales - blown up and sent crashing into the streets/occupied buildings.

I should note that I've only listed onscreen damage. Since Avengers cuts away constantly, and the characters are all split up, the Avengers have certainly caused at least twice as much offscreen damage. So we're talking over 140 explosive, car-sized vehicles flown into buildings.

(Man of Steel's battle is pretty much shown in real-time, cutting away infrequently.)

Also, on the topic of 'letting people die', Loki drops the scepter and abandons Stark Tower about five minutes into the battle. The Avengers could have prevented pretty much the entire conflict if they had simply done a cursory investigation into how the portal machine worked.

There's an animated DC movie who's name I forget that involves Superman fighting an equally powerful foe. They go hurting through the city and some debris is about to kill some civilians - Superman rushes from the fight to stop it and gets sucker-punched.

Because he's fucking SUPERMAN.

What? The giant robot laser was destroying his home. The laser on that side was threatening the whole damn planet. He decided to stop the giant laser and get rid of the small laser later. Because the big one was more of a threat.

Superman didn't even do all that damage to the city. He just plowed through a few buildings. It was the world engine that 90% of the destruction.

But you'd have to actually watch the movie to know this and that's why most of /co/ thinks it was Superman's fault.

Because Superman is a character about pretty blatant wish fulfillment and power fantasies. Having him as some weakling that fails to save everyone (and not having the entire story be about that failure) misses the point of using the character in the first place.

If they wanted DBZ fights and city destruction they should have used a character more suited towards it, but they used supes because money and it was jarring to a lot of people.

In Winter Soldier, Cap gets blown into that city bus then a goon fires a freaking chaingun into it. No elaboration is given is to rather or not the civilians inside made it out in time. Since this is a perfect glossy "fun" Marvel movie the audience is just meant to assume they did.

I thought it was boring as hell. I enjoyed the smallville fight and a little of the zod fight at the end. The entire robot fight I was just like "What is the point of this? Why is this fight happening here rather than over metropolis. Why couldnt he be fighting zod and the robot at the same time?

all of the talk of superman as a figure that will redeem humanity. this is multiple scenes, a running theme of the movie. Jor el does it, pa kent does it, ma kent does it. for me to point out which scenes do it would be listing basically all of the smallville stuff.

Superman built up as a messiah figure + LITERALLY SHOWING SUPERMAN IN FRONT OF AN IMAGE OF CHRIST = expectations.

now, if you think that MOS is an arthouse flick designed to be disappointing in its storytelling and overall unsatisfying then I might have to agree :^)

meanwhile , Superman throws the big alien goon at a tanker causing a huge explosion, avoids to stop a tanker thrown at him causing a big explosion in the building behind him as well.

but that's not the big issue here, how many times this shit is shown.
what matters is that the only times superman saves someone is either Lois, or a trivial showing/flashback. he is never shown to care about the death around him, but is devastated by Zod's death, for a moment only though, as he has to make out with Lois. Then,timeskip as if nothing happened.

Hilarious. If he's not compared to Jesus, he's thought of as a god. Meanwhile Clark is just a naive farmboy that wants to do good in a world that either hates him or wants to use him. He saves the day and people come to love him and rely on him to save the day and perform miracles with his powers.

Superman is the archtype for the superhero and is held to a much higher standard. Personally, the mass destruction in man of steel was one of the few things it got right considering how fucking often that kind of destruction happens in superman comics. With the avengers, from the very first movie, they've been established as basically a team of killers. Every single one of them.

In The Avengers they're facing a seemingly endless onslaught by an alien army with advanced technology pouring out of a hole in the sky in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world.

There was always going to be damage and The Avengers knew that. In the first film they instruct Police to get people out of the way of harm and off the streets while limiting the field of combat to a few square blocks to try to minimize and isolate the damage. They make an attempt and at the end of the film it's commented that people are upset and angry because of the destruction.

In Age of Ultron the Avengers go out of their way again to evacuate civilians and limit the amount of damage to certain areas.

The difference is that Whedon made saving people a priority, he had them go out of their way to protect save people and to try and minimize damage against overwhelming odds. Man of Steel's final fight scene is an orgy of chaos, and while Clark didn't destroy much personally, it's hard to notice unless your looking with that intent because of how large scale the damage is.

It's really a shame that this got cut out. Marvel's unwillingness to show civilians getting hurt or killed is kind of stupid. I get it though, they want these to be mass marketable films accessible to children and adults, but still it's got to be frustrating for directors when the studio interferes and edits as much as they do to maintain that style. I get why Whedon and others don't want to work with Marvel anymore.

There isn't much you can do when the script is from David Goyer. I don't put the blame on Snyder at all. He's a great visual director who enhances whatever script he's given, he just has a habit of working with mediocre scripts.

The problem with Man of Steel is the problem with everything Goyer writes. Great ideas, great monologues, terrible pacing and structure, awful character work and dialogue. Snyder polished a turd of a script and made it an enjoyable movie. I'm excited to see what he'll do with a real writer on Batman v Superman.
