Supporting characters are at least more likeable and useful than Wizard's so it's off to a better start on that alone.

I honestly think Toku would have been better off on /co/ than /m/ due to it's nature of being naturally more /co/. At the least Kamen Rider would be perfect here. Heck, doesn't it take some inspiration from some western comics?

I actually got into Rider from what I saw of people posting webms and shit here on /co/. Starting watching back in February, I've now blitzed through all the Heisei series except for Hibiki, Ryuki and Kiva, along with V3, Amazon, Stronger, ZO and J. I think if you like western superhero stories, you'll find a lot of common ground with the themes and major elements of most of the series.

I miss the cast a lot. I can't wait to see them again in the next Movie Wars. The fact that the entire movie is the crossover instead of doing two separate mini-arcs and only connecting them together at the end, means that we get to see even more of the Characters bouncing off of each other. I hope it's fun as fuck.

Oh, also, the last Ghost episode confirmed that the crossover episodes with Drive and totally canonical, so Shin and Takeru will already be introduced to each other going in, so hopefully no stupid misunderstandings to drag it down.

Kabuto and Double are the go-to Rider starters. Note that if you start with Double(W), it's best to continue after it with OOO and Fourze since they have a lot of Crossover movies that are really enjoyable to watch their characters interact. Megamax was tons of fun.

If you want serious go for Kuuga or Agito.
Something less serious? W, OOO and Fourze.
Drive or Gaim are also fine if you want something super recent.

I don't mind the slower half. You get a sense for the characters, how they interact, their motives, etc. And when it builds up to some REALLY good shit, it's great.

If you want bug-themed riders and cyborgs, I would strongly reccomend Kabuto. The plot kind of gets silly and very messy later on, but it's got he tech-based bug Rider aesthetic you're looking for and is a pretty fun ride regardless.

Sadly the original KR series isn't fully subbed yet, but I would recommend giving what's available a shot, or watching Stronger. There's also the ZO movie which is fucking fantastic.

Kabuto in particular kind of starts as serious then devolves into dumb stuff, where W is a good balance from start to end. And as someone said, W leads to OOO and Fourze immediately.

Yeah Kamen Rider generally aims a slightly older audience demographic, but compared to the original series (which actually took a pretty hard bent into horror at times) and early Heisei, the series have been a lot lighter and more kid-friendly and toyetic really ever since Den-O. Ghost especially seems to be aiming younger than usual.

It depends, Wizard's blatant padding of "OH NO I GOT DISTRACTED FOR FIVE SECONDS AND THE MONSTER DISAPPEARED OFF CAMERA" to stretch out arcs into two episodes was pretty tiresome. But at the same time, the whip-cracking pace of Ghost right now doesn't leave a lot of room for character interaction and development, and the guest characters feel really shallow and bland because they get passed by so fast.

Later Heisei series can get pretty dark too, OOO past the introduction of the purple medals starts killing civilians and delves into the "loss of humanity" themes that define most Showa Riders. Gaim takes that hard tone shift even earlier.

Most of the people who say that are the ones who overrated the shit out of Gaim and declared it "BEST RIDER EVER" despite it having its own multitude of flaws to begin with. Drive has a bit of a slow start, and a somewhat clunky ending, but its an otherwise pretty solid and enjoyable show with a great cast on both sides. Watch it.

I love both Gaim and Drive for completely different reasons.

Have you seen W? Did you enjoy W? Do you like police shows and hot-blooded protagonists powered by JUSTICE? Them yeah, you'll enjoy Drive. People bitched about it while it was airing because the first half moves slower, but it holds up REALLY well in a marathon watch.

Kuuga has a couple of flaws, mainly that the fights all follow a similar formula of "Godsi gets his shit slapped until he figures out which form is super-effective then wins by curbstomp", but what really makes the show memorable is how it frames those fights within the narrative and thematic tone of the stories within the overarching plots and character development. At risk of sounding super pretentious, it's one of the most thoughtful and deliberately-constructed Rider series, and it's worth sticking through it to see the payoff for that development in the finale.

I just loved Akira Date, guy was the bro'est of bros.
I was fine with it in Date's case, he was playing both sides.
Goto took awhile but he finally came into his own near the end.
I do think it's telling that the showrunners didn't kill Date off, like I heard was originally planned.

Agito starts off with the intention of being a direct sequel to Kuuga, but the writers quickly realized that it would work better on its own, and dropped any reference to its predecessor after like episode 4.

You don't need to watch Kuuga before it, both are fantastic series that do their own thing.

W/OOO/Fourze/Wizard are canonically tied together, and Full Throttle is totally canon to both Gaim and Drive, along with Ghost and Drive's connections being cemented pretty thoroughly, but I've always seen Gaim/Drive/Ghost as a separate world from the other Post-Decade Heisei series.

There's no point to the ghosts yet beyond combat, and even that's questionable. Ghost can use his sword forms on his own without needing to change his outfit, the last fight with pigeonhead was perfect for Musashi and Ghost simply whips out a "naginata".

The support characters are alright, though Wise Sage is boring/annoying in the way he's withholding information.

Also, the fuck is the deal with the boat.

All KR shows have their flaws.

As someone who really likes Gaim, it does a plot well because it doesn't suffer from "2-part monster of the week" syndrome that W/OOO/Fourze/the first half of Drive suffer from, has a diverse cast and good drama, though it has a lot of wasted episodes due to movie tie-ins and has a bit of a lackluster finale.

Drive starts out a bit slow with a lot of filler episodes, but around the halfway point when the third Rider shows up, it picks up really well and stays good into the finale.

Eh, Kaito's character development meanders a bit too much, and then they realize "SHIT WE FORESHADOWED THIS IN THE FIRST EPISODE, DIDN'T WE" and then make him go over the edge in the finale arc.

I mean, I can explain his character development and justify based on context in the series, but it still feels like the show just didn't want to commit to anything during the middle part of the series and Kaito feels kind of muddled for it.

I liked how at the end of the series with the epilogue, even though he didn't have the Tridoron anymore, Shinnosuke still went out and got a bitching red sports car to cruise in regardless.

The show kind of forgot that he's a car nut with all the other stuff going on, but that was a nice nod to his character.

Taisen GP was a terrible movie. Its biggest sin though is that it's actually pretty decent up until SHOCKER TOWN when the whole thing skyrockets to shit. The Kamen Rider 4 mini was great though so at least something good came of it.

I haven't watched Full Throttle yet (I dropped Drive after a few weeks and only gave it a second go near the ending), but Kouta seems so lighthearted in that clip, after all the suffering he endured over the course of Gaim. I guess it's consistent with his early characterization, but a little odd for heavy-hearted Kouta from endgame.

It's not that they can't find the time more that the company they are with won't let them since they fear it would hurt the actors rep being on a kids show. A lot of other actors have said that if they have the time to do it they would come back and reprise their roles.

The Gaim half of the movie deals with that shit and he lightens up a bit as a result of being able to fight alongside his friends again. I think it's a really good epilogue to the series. (certainly better than the shitty movie tie-in that was the ACTUAL final episode of Gaim, fuck that)

The popularity of western comics and shows in Japan were part of what led them to start making live action, masked hero shows, one of the first being Spiderman. In fact, in the Japanese Spiderman series, Spiderman had a giant robot, this idea actually lead to Super Sentai including giant robots into their team.

So toku and comics are actually deeply connected.

I've only seen season 1 and animation of Garo, definitely want to see more.
For Sentai there's plenty of places to jump in, Gokaiger was mine and it was great. It also can act as a lead in to any of the sentai seasons before it as it is basically Decade for Sentai.

Its been a long time since I watched Kabuto, but I loved it for pretty much all the reasons you listed. I suppose I liked the humor and suits and action more then I liked when it was serious, but I loved the moments when shit got real. Bocchama was my favorite supporting rider, though its really hard to pick. Most supporting riders in Kabuto were pretty based.

I guess I'm looking for something that doesn't take itself to seriously for now. I can watch the edgy stuff later when I get into the swing of things.

Try Fourze and OOO. Both are mostly light-hearted (Fourze more so) but you will still cry.

In fact, watch the first episodes of both because both do a good job at setting up the series and giving a good idea of what to expect.

W is a good series too, but the first two arcs are its worst. Unfortunately you dropped it right when it was about to start getting good.

Alright, I really liked what I saw from Fourze, though partly because when Fourze was starting was when I first got exposed to KR and I always felt like I should catch up. You might want to hold off on Decade. Decade is an anniversary / callback series so it may spoil other KR series, and overall is better watched after you're seen the series prior to it so you'll understand the cameos better.

Mebius is fucking great. It's also available entirely for free through Crunchyroll. Kikaider Reboot was also pretty good, but it definitely had some pacing issues. In a world where Kamen Rider The first and The Next exist it's probably the only gritty toku reboot that's ever really worked.

TV-Nihon is pretty fucking shit anon. They fuck up translations on a regular basis, leave words and entire phrases untranslated to "preserve the original feel," and they have absolutely no understanding of character voice. Their translations are also very stitled and put more focus on those fancy fonts and text effects than the actual quality of the translation. There's a reason so many of the projects they've already finished are being picked up again or scrubbed by other sub groups.

Hell their lead translator is neither a native English, or Japanese speaker, and it shows all the fucking time. Just use Over Time for shows they've done, and any alternatives like GUIS or scrubs for shows they haven't.

Nah, that's just a a guy who follows around Decade through every Universe to make sure everyone knows that anything bad that happens is because of Decade and to scream "Damn you Decade!" whenever possible.
Like, every time. If Decade's actor is in it, so is he. He shows up in the Gaim/ToQGer crossover cause its a prequel to the Hesei/Showa (aka post and pre 2000 riders) movie, and Decade is in that. He shows up, gives Gaim a mcguffin, says to watch out for decade cause he sucks, and leaves.

Probably because in an attempt to match the "manga," they foregone most of the legitimately good characterization Hongo had and what made him so likeable in The First and instead made him an autistic weirdo who was fascinated by snowflakes. They then threw in an unnecessary romance subplot that took away attention from the actual feel (And fucked up a really good fight scene) and still managed to also fall for classic Toshiki Inoue misunderstandings.

Then the Next made a fucking awful Ju-on rip-off subplot for no reason other than WHY NOT when if they really wanted to do horror with Rider they could've just imitated the first twelve fucking episodes of the show, retconned everything about V3 that made him interesting, removed Riderman, and had even worse misunderstandings.

The only good thing in either films is that Ichimonji became bro of the year, all years.

I just wish we got to see the Blinky Gizmo Mk.4 (aka Kamen Rider Jun) in action with the police. There was a good plot reason as to why they couldn't do shit in the first half, but past resolving that, we never got to see any difference in competency afterwards.
