If you want to know what it feels like to be whipped, go find some cable you have, something thin like a usb cable. Fold it in half holding the ends in your hand. You want about a foot and a half - 2 feet. Whip yourself on the inside of your off arm with the cable. It doesn't have to be hard, just enough that it stings a little.
Notice how it stings deep on impact and then calms down into a sort of dull, irritated lingering pain on the surface of your skin. After many whippings that lingering pain compounds into a constant irritated pain. Most people describe it as a burning sensation, I do as well, but it is quite distinct from something like a sun burn or other forms of skin irritation, and I wouldn't say it feels like being cut. Searing is a good word. As a side note, soft cloth or something similar feels divine on this sort of burning skin.
This is the basic sensation you get from impact play. What you just did I wouldn't say actually hurts, but it gets you an idea of what you feel. To get a better idea, imagine the initial sting so bad that it causes you to fall to your knees.
Different impact tools change the sensation, I would describe it like different flavors. Intensity, quality, and length of the sting, the intensity of the burning and how localized the pain is all change with the tool. I don’t have a ton of experience with different tools, which is something I mean to fix, but a paddle gives a dull sting. A riding crop gives a longer lasting sting. A rope gives a very sharp sting but it goes away quite quickly.
I have never been whipped with a single tail, so I can't describe it. Maybe someday!
The length of a session and how many strikes you can take depends on the skill of the top as much as the pain tolerance of the sub. You would be surprised at how much better you can take pain once your top knows what they are doing.
