Old one reached bump limit, so I'll start a new one beginning with a question of my own. I want to paint my metal exterior (front) door. I have some left over paint and primer in one, interior (probably answers my question right there) acrylic latex paint. After sanding the door a bit, would this adhere to the door, and if so would it hold up alright? Or should I just say fuck it and buy some exterior paint for it?

I'm also thinking of repainting the whole room, about 3x4m. Do I need to scrape off the current paint first? there are some cracks that might ruin whatever I paint on top. or should I only remove the parts where the paint is chipped easily?

Once the tree is out. You can use a shovel and your axe to cut the root ball. Basically you cut a circle around the base in the dirt. Should have 4 to 10 main roots. That are a lot softer then the tree itself.

Again.. A good felling axe! That means the more thin wide profile it is. The better... Think of those axe chopping competitions at fairs and TV. You want an axe that looks like theirs.

Don't Make A Suicide Cord, Idiot.
Either run some extension cords inside to plug in the fridge and a couple lights (and charge cellphones) or get a proper transfer/interlock, whatever the thing is called. The cheap extension cord you want to butcher, along with the cheap outlet on the wall of the garage and all the cheap wire headed back to the panel is not really rated for this awful idea, so it's not just illegal (in many places) it is also stupid.

You still need to get Wi-Fi from someone or steal it from someone.

If you can't get internet in your neighborhood you probably can't get easily from anyone else either.

You'd have to make friends with a guy on the other side of town and have both of you put up towers and point your antenas at each other

What you want is a directional Wi-Fi antenna. That's like $100 or you can DIY one for $20-$50 with a satellite TV dish (free, ask craigslist free) and a dipole ($20-$50, mostly to buy tools to make the dipole)

You can DIY one out of a cantenna, but cantennas are actually fucking terrible.

Exterior paint has lasted me in the harsh Canadian winters. No flaking, just fading after 15 years, at which point I repainted.

Non-outdoor paint reacts badly with rain, may get streaky. Use outdoor latex paint. No oil, no spray.

If they're using WPA with a decent password, then you don't.

You just don't.

It's not 2002 anymore, wifi has no implementation errors you can exploit anymore, so if you can't guess the password, you're not getting on.

Routers, nowadays, come with a secure algorithm selected and a secure password already set, so your mark would have to have intentionally de-secured it for you to have any luck.

It fucking is. Name a single protocol vulnerability.

You can't, because there isn't one. All exploits involve capturing handshakes and using them to validate a brute-force of the password.

Which you can't do if the password isn't trivial.

And you can't do at all against a RADIUS AP, because the key is per-user per-session.

The only other thing you can do to WPA is a script-kiddy DOS with fake/replayed deauth packets, which 802.11w prevents.

Cattleprod is less likely to be considered a weapon and more a tool. Weapon laws often go by intent. carrying it around in public is brandishing, which can show intent. using it on a person basically shows de facto intent.

just go to hardware store or art store and grab a can of spray clear coat. acrylic is probably the most common. clean well first, or you will get bubbles/dust in the coat.

I live in a two bedroom apartment in Brisbane, Australia. Recently we've been receiving ludicrous monthly power bills (the last two have been $300 and $200). The power company says this is enough for a 6 bedroom household, we used 657kWh.

The apartment has no air conditioning, heating or gas. My room mate is at home most of the time playing on his computer (which has a 500W power supply) and I spend most of my time at uni. We do not own a television or any other gadgets besides phones. All our lights are energy saving bulbs and we do not use the clothes drier.

I just can't work out how our power bills could be so fucking big. Any one know what could cause it? My best guess is a broken hot water thing but even that seems unlikely

check rating plates for all devices, figure out how long you have each one on for, spreadsheet that this up.
if you are pumping 7kw/h into a wiring fault or something somewhere i should think it would have made itself apparent quite quickly.

I was joking to my room mate this morning that we're probably going to get raided by cops if we keep this up. I went down into the basement earlier to find the meter and it is measured seperatley (pic related is mine) and is significantly higher than everyone elses on my floor

if you genuinely think your meter is over-reading then usually you can put in a complaint and they set up a clamp meter to check its within tolerance.

Disagree. If you've got an issue with ass sweat, leather is not your jam. Leather is durable as all hell, but it's A)kinda pricey and B) does not breath well so you will have ass swear buildup puddles. Which won't hurt the leather.

I'd suggest canvas, and building it like a camp chair with tension instead of with padding.
It'll let air transfer happen, and is much much cheaper.
Like $2/yard instead of $20/yard. (Painter's dropcloths are a good option)
At that price, you can patch/replace any stained sections regularly, and odds are that you're going to want to change the furniture in 5-10 years anyway.

In pic related (a winch) there is a mechanism at the front which sweeps back and forth to lay the cable neatly onto the spool. It uses a double threaded rod and automatically changes direction at the end of travel, meaning it can operate no matter which direction the shaft is rotating.

Does anyone know the name of this mechanism? Specifically, I need to know how the cable loop slider interacts with the grooved rod, and how it reverses when it hits end of travel.

Otherwise I will need to jack hammer up the whole thing right? If I'm going that route should I just lay cement again after I jack hammer it up? Or would like laying one of those gardening tarps then covering it in bricks to make a brick walkway work too? Would I need to set the bricks in some masonry stuff or can they just be put in loosely?

Basically I'm looking for a good looking durable walkway that isn't beyond my pretty low skill levels to do.

Typically, ball bearings in the fairlead follower ride in the grooves of the shaft. The grooves simply do a partial u-turn at the ends of travel on the shaft.

Do not touch the patina, least of all with a wire brush. Any value it might have will be gone...
Please, ask your dad and grandad where it came from, it may be a family sword or have a long history.
The black and gray rust is a sign of an old blade, it might be hundreds of years old.
The best you can do is to clean it with a damp cloth, dry and oil it with sewing machine oil or a non corrosive oil in light layers.

My plan is to get a sheet of aluminum, give it a brushed finish and secure it to the front of the case.
My case however has air holes I need to transfer over to the aluminum sheet, but don't exist on the front of the plastic.
I have a few questions:

I need to attach some aluminum (or stainless steel) angle to some aluminum sheet. The assembly it's for is going to be a really tight fit so I can't really use rivets or screws without inconveniencing myself. My house was built by a retired metalworker and that's what he used for the basement steps. Fabricated his own brackets, but you could find something I am sure.

At first I was like "man that shit is ghetto", but they are solid as fuck. my 230lb ass took a digger going down those stairs once after stepping on my kid's toy car and caught the railing and it held and saved my ass (concrete basement floor hit woulda been nasty).

Here it is. Looking closer, the brackets he fabricated are plate steel stock, with a thread end of a metal pipe (about an inch or so?) welded on, and two holes for the bolts drilled through. The end going into the wall goes into a 12x12 inch huge old beam that the front of the house rests on. Not sure how deep.

I bet you could rig something up even considering the floating side of your stairs is where you would want the railing. Sink it into the ceiling and the floor at the bottom, figure out the angle of the bend, weld pieces or use an angled joint pipe, etc. It's pretty damn strong. Besides one end being sunk into the beam, it only has two brackets on it: the one at the end in the pic and another one that is about 6/7 feet up from the bend in the pipe there.

Unfortunately for you, looks to me like your issue is that the zinc plating has worn off in those areas. so the only fix I know of would be to sand it all lightly, treat it with acid, and electroplate it with more zinc.
alternatively, you could try shining up the dull areas with steel wool, then using some sort of clearcoat before it rusts back to grey.

Look into forges, they should get hot enough to melt steel. The burner on my natural gas forge only needed hardware store parts and sone drilling and tapping. The body did need some refractory brick and ceramic fiber insulation, though

Charcoal foundries can get up to 3kf, the real issue is you need to use better refractory that will retain more heat without cracking, good air circulation, and the right amount of fuel. The cheaper homemade ones top out around 2200f if well made.
Propane or waste oil are easier to heat up fast though.
Regardless, you'll definitely need a design with a top for heat retention.
Really, the crucible tends to become more of an issue at those higher temperatures (because the homemade ones tend to be thin steel, so oxidation is a real issue.

First off, is this just completely retarded? I'm new to all this and generally retarded about this kind of stuff so please tell me if that's the case. To me, it seems that since the battery pack is charged through a USB connection, I could plug it into the solar charger and (slowly) charge it for later use. If this is correct, then maybe I fucked up the energy required to charge it/what the solar charger is capable of.

If I'm somewhere on the right track, I'm wondering if this is a decent idea and I could improve it with different components. I'm going to post this elsewhere and keep researching it, thanks for any info.

I'm able to connect and upload programs to the original arduino uno, but I'm having issues with this one. When I try to upload it just says "problem uploading to board", and when I try to open the serial monitor it says "Board at COM3 is not available"

Using arduino 1.6.5
I've selected "arduino/genuino mega or mega 2560" as a board.

As you understand I'm quite new to this, so I'm guessing there's an easy fix to this. Even just a link to the correct tutorial page could be helpful

I got here reading about building sprinkler heads, turns out they use this stuff as a thermal fuse in situations where a glass bulb trigger is not practical because of its low melting point. The wiki page also says this stuff can be used for pipe bending as an alternative to sand packing; for the narrow diameter brass tubing I work with, this could be highly useful. as I often find despite packing hard, there is just not enough material in the bend to hold the pipe open without crushing the sand within.

Does anyone have any practical experience with this material? It seems modeltrainfags use this to weigh down carriages as well, but i'm not sure they'd be melting it.

The page also has a toxicity warning because lead and cadmium. Assuming standard procedures are followed (work in well ventilated area, do not stand over and huff the job while you work it, wear gloves) is there that much of a risk?

Sure, anon... you can get bargraph nixies like this one.

You can also take a normal neon tube and drive it with RF so that it only glows for part of its length, and vary the rf signal to vary its length... I've seen a clock that uses that technique with a neon tube bent in a circle but I can't find it right now

I've had bad luck getting latex to stick to metal door finishes, better results were had using automotive/industrial finishes.
I ended up sanding to bare metal, then priming and painting with "hard-hat" enamel. Looked about like the factory finish, mild orangepeel and all.

first I would suggest sanding by hand. I suspect a grobet vul-crylic rasp would be great for roughing, with wet-dry sandpaper for finishing. To make a grinder out of the motor, a lot depends on the shaft type. A welder wouldn't help with this. A wood lathe or metal lathe would. Good luck

It is quite sad, hard all of the time. I work with the parameters I am given though. For the huge amount of time I spend in my room when I am ill, I have taken up sewing and wooden spoon carving. I don't do well in dusty/polluted environments, so I have backed off machining and welding as source of income and happiness. To help keep skin from drying and itching I carry around avocado oil in a tiny dispenser bottle with a carabiner attached. Since I don't have enough energy to both exercise and work, I try to do work which provides gentle exercise. I also fix woodworking tools and sharpen things for money, which don't require leaving home much. I make tea one pitcher at a time and often tell myself to put one foot in front of the other.

Wood is not a great holder for sockets. It will suck up oil, grime and other nastiness that sockets generally come into contact with and it can harbor moisture. Moisture and metal to not get along. It undoubtedly looks cool but I would either pick a different material or use the concept for a different type of tool. Wooden drill bit holder for example. Drill bits are a consumable item (you will probably toss them before they rust) and they are much easier to keep clean than sockets (no grime problems).

This is fairly strange, normally you'd just put it in another axle.

You could put one or both gears on bearings and put the bearings on the axle and that should be acceptable for many loads. The axle would only be aligning the gears.

alright: I have an axle/rod and on this I will install multiple wheels/discs that will turn one after the other (like a kinetic sculpture). so, when I turn one disc, it will turn the other one next to it and so on (with small intervals of time between them). At the very end, I want the last disc to turn in an opposite direction (with the help of gears of some sort).

A few months ago my family moved out of the suburbs and into the outskirts of the city. My dad, who grew up on a farm, suddenly turned from brooding, news-paper reading couch potato into an diy-er. As it turned out, he actually knew a lot about DIY in and around the house. As we have a nice (for netherlands standards) piece of land around it, we started on some projects in the garden. Nothing that major, just small stuff like building a chicken pen, fenced of a piece of land for sheep, made a roof over the swimming pool, etc.

In the next few months we started bonding a lot over those projects. He's getting older though (is there anything worse then seeing your dad slowly declining?) and nowdays I basically do most of the heavy work and he teaches me new shit.

However, three weeks ago I went abroad to study for 3 months. Part of this great experience is having too much free time and I'm bored out of my mind. As a new and very inexperienced diy-er I've decided this might be a good time to learn some new shit and to come up with some ideas for when I get back home to work on with my dad.

So all in all I am in need of some ideas. Hence the following questions

I have not met a glue that cannot be sanded when completely cured. Doubt you'll have a problem. Meanwhile, for actual (cyanacrolate) superglue, acetone can be used as a thinning agent. Do not use acetone based nail polish remover. This has oils in it that will gunk out the mix, and like any thinning process, less is more. Its easy to add thinner if needed, impossible to remove if you overshoot.

Hot Stuff is good, pretty cheap, available in a range of viscosities, and comes in a much larger bottle than those tiny tubes.

Is it a vehicle worth saving, or are you just trying to stop your groceries from getting wet?

To do it right, if you can't find a replacement panel, you're going to need to cut out all of the rusted stuff, form a patch panel, weld it in, seal it, prime it, and paint it.

If it is not a rare sort of vehicle (i have no idea what it is from that pic), you will likely be able to at least purchase a patch panel, which will make life much easier.

So I have a microcontroller that gets its clock input from a 25 MHz crystal. The design manual says to add some caps and a resistor but doesn't tell me how to determine the C and R values apart from saying they depend on the crystal used.
The crystal datasheet gave me an ESR value of 40 Ohms and load capacitance of 18 pF, is that what I'm looking for?

Calculation is correct, but your stray capacitance sounds really high.
The datasheets almost always recommend something for typical crystals. Use those, unless there's really need to adjust the values.

No, the resistor is there to prevent overloading the crystal (exceeding its maximum drive level). It's rarely needed at 25MHz.

You'll have to install ch340g drivers. Just google it, there's a lot of solutions.

I also bought a bunch of arduino nano and r3 uno clones from banggood and they all use ch340 series chips.

No.
Latex paint is for wood/paper surfaces, and oil-based paint is for metal surfaces.
You do not use either on the other.
Latex will not adhere to metal very well, it's a waste of time even trying.
And if you use oil paint on wood, it will remain partially wet and smell like wet paint for several MONTHS.

the magnet is a ceramic ring in the center... the thing you see in the center is the center pole of the base plate. it isn't the actual magnet (pic related)

the pieces are usually just glued together with a slightly gummy glue; you can carefully pry them apart with a sharp flat screwdriver, digging & wedging it in around the outside edge

the bottom cap you may have to rip off in pieces with some pliers. its just a metal cap, it doesn't really do anything anyway

That is a variable bank capacitor. It is almost certainly for the AM tuning section of the radio.
If it is good for anything else, I dunno.
Modern discrete AM circuits don't need such big variable caps; some do still use air-gapped caps but the whole thing is built inside a plastic box smaller than 1 cubic inch.

Replaced my stock stereo in my car ~5 months ago and hadn't had any issues until this weekend.
Got a whine in the back right speaker when accelerating, so I decided to take it out and check everything. Redid a couple of wires on the harness but other than that just threw the fucker back in.
Now the whining is gone but I'm not confident it's going to stay gone, and instead I get a very faint static-y noise. Easily played over when I turn the volume up, but anyone have any idea what would cause them to start fucking up out of the blue?
Could the problem be in my speakers or my (admittedly somewhat sloppy) wiring job?

I have to put a door in, and the only place it will fit would only have 80 inches. The default door with frame is 81.5 inches. I live in a cold area, so just putting it in frameless and insulating is a bad idea with many problems.

To buy a custom door would be very expensive and I am trying to avoid it.

No. The "standard" connector is an ordinary 20 pin IDC connector with 0.1" pin spacing. You know, like the usual pin strip you see everywhere, except that you have 2 rows of 10 pins.
The newer connectors use 0.05" pin spacing.

And then you came to fourchin, which is a good place for finding faggots who think that ruining your leds is fun.
If you have only 4 or less of them, the easiest way would be to connect them in series and use the power supply in constant current mode.
Connecting them in parallel is iffy, unless you use current limiting / ballast resistors.

If you are talking about paralleling them directly, then the problem is that the small differences in LED forward voltages result in not-so-small differences in currents. You can reduce this by using small series resistors (so that the voltage drop in resistor is much higher than the variation in forward voltages). After doing that you can feed them from a constant current source.

In parallel. Each diode will subtract its forward voltage from the available voltage if you put them in series so you'd only be able to have 4 in series.
Usually you'd want to use a resistor in series with each diode to limit the current.
R = (V_supply - V_f) / I_f
But since your LEDs draw this much current there shouldn't be any need for external resistors. If you keep the supply voltage at like 9V and/or put two diodes in series, and these pairs of diodes in parallel (see sketch), the resistance of the wires should be enough to limit the current.

pic related is the inside of a Tube Driver pedal I have (not my pic) which came with a 12ax7, but I put a 12at7 into it to calm it down a bit.

I'm not sure about the others, but some look vaguely familiar enough that they might be less common designations for common power amps.

depends on the charger. a proper charger will maintain a constant current, so you could put a shorted battery, or a metal bolt to fill the empty slot. if you have an ammeter, you can confirm. otherwise, just try it, and check that the battery is not overheating.

I worked at McDonald's a few years ago and this is the standard issue belt they gave me with my employee uniform. It's a nice belt that I've kept very clean and wearable to this day. I like it, but I don't want to wear it out in public because it would be really silly to be seen wearing a belt with McDonald's printed on the buckle.

Do you have an idea as to how I could cleanly remove the McDonald's logo from the buckle? I've been thinking of a few ways I could go about it.

1.) Using my soldering iron to melt out the logo
2.) Grinding it out with sandpaper possibly? I don't know
3.) Just cutting out the logo with a dremel and leaving a big hole where the logo was

Do you have any ideas?

In b4 "JUST BUY A BELT!" I already own several belts and I really could just throw this belt away, but I don't want to just waste it and this makes for a fascinating DIY project.

you cant fucking sand it off or you will end up wuth a hole where the letters are you mongoloid

if you are determined to ruin this belt then rough up the surface a little an dfill the logo with putty or something. you will still see it unless you paint over it.

my friend got me this really cool infinity gauntlet piggy bank for my birthday BUT dont nobody use cash anymore so i dont really plan on putting coins in this.

i did, however, just shine my phones flashlight through the bottom of it and it looks really cool when the inside is lit up. so my question is, what would be the easiest and most effective way of making this a battery powered lamp/light?

yeah, either cut out the logo and replace with some sort of plate, or just bolt/screw a new logo/symbol on top of it. just don't do something tasteless like a bat symbol or a state shape cutout.

It's hard to tell from the photo but it looks like you'd have to grind away the entire thickness of the metal before getting rid of the logo.

Could you press the buckle so it's completely flat, than sand and polish away what's left of the logo?

Everyone who regularly worked in the back or to stock would buy a belt holster to carry them around.

I actually put a paracord lanyard on mine to make it unique if I dropped it or something.

On delivery day you would just cut boxes after boxes open. Blades were dull as fuck

The slightly larger, opaque green versions are better. I've used them to open thousands of boxes. Take a pair of pliers and bend off the guard and it's not a bad utility knife. Except for requiring special blades.

What do you think about cutting big trunks of lumber with a circular saw ?
Cuts will be made in 2 passes, above and below.

I plan on buying some 200x120x2600 trunks of Oak and my circular saw goes 67mm deep. I would like to make some 30x120x2600 smaller trunks. Then I can glue them and make some nice boards.
A trunk of oak this size is about 40$, making it really profitable so.
