Here are some I've picked up:

This one is prob most important

>Don't allow a puddle to form infront of your direction of travel, if it happens fix it by getting ahead of it by speeding

But if it happens, your stick weld won't come out perfect.

Also pretty much all this is wrong with the exception of angles. Miller has good videos if you're a first timer.

Of course you want a puddle in front of your rod, where else would it be? If it's behind your rod then you're going too fast. The distance from your rod to your piece should be roughly half the thickness of the rod you're using.

Hold it at the end a little longer and you'll get rid of that indent, 6010 is great for root passes and pipe but if you don't have to use it for fill and cover I wouldn't. Get you some 1/8 7018

Mig usually uses a sheilding gas in its place

The principal is the same but theres alot to read about fluxcore depending on what you're doing

mig and fluxcore can be done with the same machine. the smart thing is to get a good gas shielded mig setup like a millermatic 250 and also a spool of quality self-shielded wire like NR211MP. (don't bother with china-made fluxcore wire, it's unreliable. fucks up welds that should have gone perfectly.) you can also mig weld stainless and alu by changing filler wire and shielding gas.

or you can go down the typical retarded route of buying a harbor freight 90 amp wirefeed turd that can barely penetrate 1/8 steel, then a stick box that burns through anything thinner than 3/16, then a tig you can never afford the argon to practice with, then years later FINALLY buying a decent mig and feeling ashamed of all the time and money you wasted. just sayin'

Also, why are you getting so much spatter? Experiment by turning the voltage down first, if that doesn't fix it, turn it higher.

Hey guys, so my girlfriend is going to school for welding(she's never been a real shop person, she just needs work and her dad said he could help teach her) and I'm not gonna lie it kinda makes me feel a little insecure. i've started to pick up a few things, but I was wondering if anyone had a go to, like a book or a audio book/lecuture I could grab.

Shit like when people talk about different rod types. I understand the first 2 numbers are tensile strength but I don't really know what that means, the third number is the position it could be used in and I forget the last. How does one even know what rod to use, what options are out there?

Stick welding has always interested me, I need to try doing it some day.

I'm weird in that I learned to weld in a high-end race car fabrication shop and have only ever used a very high-end TIG (Miller 200DX). I've never even tried the MIG, much less a stick.

It's not about competing. I have no intention of ever being better or near her skill level. It's just that I know absolutely nothing about any trades or tools. So I would like to start to understand at least on a basic level all of this stuff. She'll be a professional welder, but at least I can get my knowledge level to that of handy dad who can do car maintenance in his garage, to understand at least half the shit she talks about when she gets back from school.

But I will probably also check out carpentry, thanks. Like I said I want a solid foundation for general diy related things.

Personally I think the insecurity comes from the fact that growing up I was a dumpy fat kid who never played any sports or did anything hands on and every time there was anything involved with tools or the like I was pretty much told to go away and that I was just getting in the way. This led to me never wanting to be involved in this stuff since it made me feel bad. I then associated people who are involved and good at this stuff as the kinda people who would get frustrated with me easily.

Having her get into welding is like having those thoughts(mostly subconscious) rubbed in my face constantly and its making me uneasy. So I figure, instead of letting it bother me i should take it as an opportunity to overcome that and start to learn all I can about diy and tools and a few various trades. I'll grab a few books on carpentry, I want to learn some basic car maintenance, maybe how to fix my sink, and know my way around a tool box. And like I said as far as welding goes, I'd like to know what she's talking about so it doesn't sound like mumbo jumbo to me and learn how to do some basic shitty welds myself. I'm not expecting to become a professional.

However I won't rule out that my insecurity isn't about other things. Maybe I feel emasculated deep down. I dunno, I don't think that's it, but maybe.

Cool thanks. How proficient can one get at these things as a hobby? Over the past 2 days I grabbed a few books on carpentry and a friend is going to teach me how to take apart a lawnmower engine and put it back together. I'm just curious as to how much I can expect out of these things doing them once a week or so and in spare time.

honestly I'd really love to take a class, get in a shop with some actual heavy duty equipment but I don't have the time. I'm jealous hearing about my girlfriend learning to use a torch cutter and band saw. Really wish I wasn't so useless as a teenager and took some shop and developed some real skills.

Alberta B-Pressure certification is recognized world-wide.

There's lots of shit you can do with welding if you're skilled enough. They are fast and look easy, but are actually really hard, so most places just don't let anyone do them.

I wouldn't have passed that. Bad starts and stops, inconsistent width and ripple, that pit packed with slag, what looks like cold lap along the top edge, and rather a lot of spatter for 6013. A multi-pass 6013 weld should be smoothly washed into both sides and between each bead.

Angle the rod up a bit as you do the upper pass to get it to tie in better. Start farther back to make sure that the fillet spans the entire width of the pieces you're welding. If it's too hot at the end to fill completely, break the arc and let the puddle freeze, then strike another arc to fill the crater. Rod control can prevent holes and inclusions, but if you have one, grind it out to clean metal with a wide enough space that you can avoid trapping slag. If you have trouble with arc blow, switch to AC (viable for 6013 but not 6010). For 6013, it's often useful to use a slight side to side weave to help produce more buildup and a smoother bead. A good 6013 bead should look like it was done with MIG. For 6010, use a forward and back whipping motion, alternating between burning ahead for good penetration and going back for fill. Maintain a short arc length for penetration and spatter reduction. Compared to 6013, use lower amperage and a bit faster travel speed. You'll have less buildup and much better penetration. A good 6010 bead should look like a row of overlapping dimes.

MIG deposits metal much faster, and can easily be adjusted to handle both very thin and very thick metal. It also requires much less post-weld cleaning than SMAW. It deposits less heat for a given weld, so it can minimize distortion. However, SMAW does have its own benefits. Stick welding can be done outside in wind, over rust, paint, and grease, and with specialty rods that aren't economical to get as wire spools (nickel, hardfacing, etc.). Stick welding usually achieves better penetration than short-circuit MIG, and it is more resistant to cold lap. Spray-arc MIG is used for hot, large welds needing high deposition and excellent penetration, and is probably not within the purview of this discussion.

what is the industry name for pulse arc tig welding? I am looking at getting a basic solid state model off aliexpress. yes I know it wont be perfect but I only plan to weld manifolds, exhaust pipes, basic sheet metal stuff and some extrusions to make frames and things for like table legs and this one seems the most appealing type of welding technology due to its versatility and ability to weld materials with fancy oxidizing layers like stainless steel and aluminium. people tell me I should be looking at spending at least 10k$ on a setup like this but I dont plan to weld inch thick plates, not even anything over 3mm really so all good.

Just look for a machine that advertises a pulsed setting. That's mostly a higher-end feature though, as seen with the Miller 200DX mentioned above. What pulsed TIG offers is improved penetration for a given amperage. It's not necessary for any task I'm aware of, but it can make some things easier. It will not, for example, deal with the oxide films on stainless or aluminum better than non-pulsed TIG. So long as you purge any penetration, DC negative TIG handles stainless just fine with basic cleaning. Aluminum requires AC in order to blast off its tougher oxide layer. The 200DX offers all this and more for a bit over $4k for the machine. It's what I'd personally get for your situation (it's also what I use most often at work), but you might have preferences regarding brands or particular bells and whistles. Be aware that for a money-making machine, you really want something nice. A cheap machine will cost you increased production time and increased rework due to inferior performance and control.

pipe is often done with 6010 downhand cranked up really hot. It is ground out before being filled and capped with 7018 manually or with a sub arc. This is pretty much the only place downhand welding is truly acceptable. A lot of people are ignorant of this but it is standard, and it works. The shit fails, people could die and the welder who did the root pass gets his mouth legally shit in. If done right it works.

Since then, I've learned a little bit of welding because of it but I also learned that welding is much more vast than the little bit that I learned. But I also don't feel like spending 2 years at a tech school to have the required knowledge to get paid what a real welder should. Also, I've heard that your eye sight deteriorates whether you use the googles/mask or not(of course it deteriorates faster, WAY faster without) so there's that too.

The third number indicates position. Almost all rods used today display a 1, because they are all position. 7024 is still used a bit, and can only be used flat. It displays a 2.

Try striking the rod like you would a match instead of tapping it straight into the work piece.
With enough practice you will and should be able to do it with your eyes closed.

The tendency of rods to stick varies by type, as does the best way to fix the stuck rod. Ideally, it's a weak stick, and you can just break it off without damage to the flux. This is less common for low-hydrogen rods and baked 6010/11 due to their ductility, as they tend to bend before breaking off and crack the flux back a ways. Slag may have solidified in an awkward spot and need careful chipping/scraping off. If you break the flux back, you're in much the same place as with a well-stuck 7018. You'll need to trim the exposed rod back to a point where the flux will burn when an arc is struck (it's very difficult to strike an arc with bare metal in air). A bench grinder is probably your best bet for that, but it can be done with wire cutters if you're careful.

Starting will become easier with practice, as will dealing with stuck rods and other problems.

You never push stick. Never. I'd fire the joker that did it in my shop. If an AWS or CWB inspector saw you doing it, they would throw your plate in the scrap bin. Whoever says otherwise knows jack shit. The only situation I can think where you would push is in the case of really bad arc blow at high amperage, to try to reverse the field's direction. And this is only an emergency measure

Not a welder, but isn't carrying the/some slack along with the melted ball along, as you go (pushing or pulling), the point? So the newly melted surface/rod doesn't oxidize (too quickly)? I thought that was the point, pushing or pulling doesn't matter as long as this is done to create a good weld, at least that was how I was "teached" many years ago. Is this bad info and I've made bad welds or what?

as long as you stopped, ground out the slag and redid the weld you haven't been making bad welds.
if you've been weaving over the top of visibly defective welds with the power turned up thinking 'eh, it'll burn in' you ought to change your ways.

It's easier to control when doing vertical welding, but you should never use it for a root pass, as the side-to-side motion disperses heat and you sacrifice penetration. When the workpiece is already hot from doing multiple passes, it's less of an issue.

There are some welders who can pass an x-ray test not weaving at all. It never looks good, but it is solid. A straight stringer bead will always be stronger, but for a pretty looking cap on a vertical joint, weaving is what you want to do
