Hi /diy/, maybe someone here can help.

My 2nd-hand exercise bicycle (pic related, Proform 748 EKG) doesn't change resistance levels, only shows the change on the display, and is mechanically stuck on the first one; this is accompanied by a constant, repetitive knocking sound from the inside.

After some prying, the sound comes from a small box near the flywheel(?) [the larger back wheel that supplies resistance to the one you spin with the pedals, via a strap]; the box constantly pulls and releases a short cord (like a real bicycle's break cord), that is attached to this resistance wheel, in what I assume would normally control the resistance level.

Batteries for the dash are new, and the motherboard looks clean, all electronics connected and soldered and nothing seems burnt or broken. I suspect the mechanism. any ideas what might be going on here?
