Hi /diy/,

Can anyone assist in how to make a vacuum filtration device from materials and tubing, such as PVC, found at a store like home depot?

I'm attempting a home extraction of capsaicin (the spicy molecule) from a batch of habenero peppers.

I planned on using a simple T joint which would attach to my water spicket in my backyard, I just basically need a use able design for the vacuum flask, as it is the filtrate I'm keeping and not the solids.

Your vacuum flask could just be a length of pipe with a cap on bottom, and a threaded nipple drilled into the side to attach to the vacuum hose.

That, a few rubber fittings, a small shower/sink strainer, and a food-grade bucket with an appropriately-sized hole, and you're in business.

Oh, and of course a source of vacuum. I doubt a basic T-joint would provide the proper venturi effect, if that's what you were trying to say.

I bought one of these pumps and it did not work; they didn't use TWO one-way valves in the fucking thing.
it was too much bother to return it, but it simply does not function the way it comes. And there was no easy way to try to fix it, since the pump itself is plastic and glued together, and there was no other source of one-way valves I knew of that would mate to the tubing it came with.

I tried two other different cheap siphon pumps like that, and amazingly enough--neither of them worked either. At that point I gave up on the concept and used another method.

OP: the usual way you gan get a cheap low-level suction is to buy a brake bleeding kit for cars. It will have a little suction hand-pump included in it. You just have to make sure that you don't suck anything but air all the way into the pump. (adults only: this is the usual type included with penis enlargers and other similar sex paraphernalia, FYI,,,)

I was buying a fish tank air pump the other day, and I could have sworn I saw a little check valve that you could put on it in the same aisle. Not certian, since I don't really know anything about aquariums (I was buying the pump for homebrewing) but it seems like this may have worked?

You can use automotive fuel line as vacuum tubing.

The aspirator just screws into your sink faucet. Turn on the faucet and the water flow causes suction
You could try other things like a hand pump for bleeding brakes.

So lets see, whats you're method of extraction?
Drying, grinding it up, soaking in ethanol and then collecting the ethanol?
If thats the case the buchner funnel is only to collect pepper bits and you'd want to skip filter paper, the plastic buchner funnels often come on two pieces and you can put cotton or cheese cloth inside to filter instead of easily clogged filter paper.
If thats the way you could probably just soak ground up pepper in ethanol. Take a funnel, put in a wad of cotton, pour the ethanol through and collect it in a cup or something. After you heat it to evaporate the ethanol and dry.

yea I know about those.
It is called an anti-siphon valve, that you put on an air pump to make sure that if the power goes out, the water doesn't rush backward through the submerged air line, get carried over the aquarium edge and start a siphon into the air pump.

I tried a couple different kinds I could find locally--and those didn't work. They allowed hardly any air flow "forward" (and far less water flow) and they did not really seal "backward". And they are totally-plastic and glued shut, so you can't really easily open them to try to fix them.
There might be a company that makes ones that really work, but the couple I found at a local Wal-Mart did not.
