Planning on building an RC nitro car from scratch.
I'll be designing literally everything, the chassis, engine, gearbox, wheels, suspension, controller circuitry etc.

Has anyone attempted something similar? Any advice?

I'll get a few things laser cut, but I plan on hand machining all that I can, and having a few important things done on a CNC.

There are an infinite amount of problems that can be solved.
Most people think its stupid to invest that much time reinventing the wheel.

Or maybe you plan on making a "boutique" RC car company!
I hear that long lead times and ultra expensive things just for the sake of being stupid expensive is "in" nowadays.

Make a completely new chassis, using existing engine and suspension. or make a new engine, in an existing chassis? Fine. pretty challenging project.
Try to do everything? that's just stupid. you'll never get around to completing it.

Make a new engine, in someone else's chassis, etc, and after you're done, then you can start thinking about making a new chassis too. Trying to create everything from a blank page, however, and it will never be finished.

Lets see.

1. Because Aston Martin, and importantly, Aston Martin's customers would want a new model which they will sell 2,000 copies of every year, making them tens of millions.
2. Because they have a staff of several thousand of the best engineers and designers in the world doing the designing, and assembling them, to create something that is new and improves on what's already out there.
3. Because they use the same parts each time. They have a dozen different models, but they're all assembled on the same chassis. Because they're not stupid enough to reinvent the wheel every time they create a new design.
4. Because they are a business planning to do it for profit, not someone doing it for themselves.

building good metal gears is pretty difficult... you need a 4+ axis mill to cut them, and then flame-hardening (for steel...) and nobody that I've ever seen sold a decent array of mix-and-match metal gears in any size.

Stock Drive Products advertises a wide range of steel and stainless-steel metal gears, but a lot of those items have been listed as "out of stock" for YEARS now.
Which leads me to believe that if you wanted 500 or 1000, they'd find the time to make them for you--but if you only want 1 or 2, then sorry, they're still 'out of stock'.

This, transmissions are a pain. Contract out the work to different specialists. One guy for the gearbox, another for the engine, and you can do the chassis and electronics yourself.

Pick up a book on thermodynamics and start reading, engines don't work on magic.

Actually the engine part is pretty simple, it's the carburetor that determines whether you have a paperweight or not.

Or you could just buy a complete nitro engine for $100.
