I was looking to do an aluminum cast of a bolter (pic related,) but cannot find any templates, patterns or plans anywhere for the wax or foam I'd use for the form. Can anyone help?

Also, if anyone's done such a large casting, how much do you think it'd take to do a solid, one piece cast? I'm estimating about 10 pounds, anyone disagree?

There's a load of Papercraft patterns for Bolters, you could use those as a template then either build from plasticard and foamcore, or build from Card then strengthen.

Remember that you have to account for shrinkage (which for Ali is quite a bit). Doing it as one piece would be a massive ball ache, you need a huge sprue system and to pour loads of metal at the right heat.

Do yourself a favour and cast it in smaller pieces (or two halves) then drill and pin it with JB Weld (or epoxy) like you would any other large model.

I can't see why it would need the additional structural integrity of being one piece and no fucker will be able to tell if you're painting it. You are painting it right?

That's what I was thinking, a single cast would be a pain in the ass. It'd be epic, but troublesome. Doing a lost-foam cast would be easier, and I could always fill it with steel shot or tin for extra weight. And yes, it will be painted. You can't field an unpainted model.

I'm retarded and can't finish a thought. "Doing a lost-foam cast in 4 pieces (left upper shell, right upper shell, grip and trigger, and magazine) would be easier, and I could always fill it with shot or tin for extra weight.
