Hello /diy/ I'm looking at getting a drill press. I don't need a big expensive stand up model, as I'll probably just be using it for light gun smithing work. Drilling out rivets and such. I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations? I've been liking at the skil 3320-01. It's seems perfect for my needs. But, I like to do thourough research before I buy, and I've always trusted you all.

With a cheap drill, you will always have some runout and roughness.

With that said i actually have that drill (rebadged as a Wen).

Its a decent deal for the price, its runout is acceptable. I had bought a Harbor freight 10" drill and it was so awful i returned it. I plan on buying a better chuck for it, but for punching holes its great

That's what I've heard. So the wen is the same drill press, just rebranded? Same parts and everything?

Yes, I have looked at them side by side IRL
The only difference were the shape of the quill handle knobs, and the bed adjustment handle.

Ive also seen it under the "performax" name in 2 varieties IRL (in grey/ and the newer lime green) and I dont recall the name but I saw a blue one on Amazon.

Its like all the 70s imported drill presses, there were patterns used that were just rebadged like crazy.

Interesting. Do basically if I'm buying in the ~ 100 dollar range, it doesn't matter.

This particular drill is in the ~100$ range, and its decent for what it is. I wouldnt be surprised if other hardware store house brands have repainted them too.

I didnt look too much further into other drills because I had just returned the HF one, and this one seemed OK in the store.

Like the home depot Rockwell and the Craftsman ones were closer to 200$ but didnt seem any better.

I have one of the Craftsman ones in that size, and I'd have a hard time imagining something worse, so I'm thinking that it's basically the same thing with an added laser aiming device that is basically useless because it needs to be re-zeroed based on part distance away from spindle.

Basically, the things the define drill presses in this range are large amounts of spindle run out, low rigidity, fairly high minimum spindle speed (bad thing for metal cutting), and small spindle travel range. Also, careful too, it's hard to clamp the table tight on the round column, so depending on your setup, it might make it move a bit.

The drill press OP posted does actually have a laser device on it.
And yeah, its 600RPM at its slowest which is pretty fast for a lot of metal stuff.

The biggest problem ive seen is all the 8inch or smaller drill presses (unless you buy a real high quality one) are way worse in every aspect.
