How to get it thinner

Dear DIY guys

So I made this machete out of a piece of spring steel that I found. I got the shape just right but the thickness is...well, too thick.

Does anyone know a way to make this thinner? Preferably without heat tempering?

The handle and mid body are too thick.

And yes, it makes it rather heavy. Its not so bad if you wear a glove to get better grip but its rather heavy for a one handed weapon

i would take off 75% of what you want to remove with a bench grinder then the last 20% with a fiber disk on an angle grinder. then a belt sander for finish it off.

also for some fun get a big magnet and put it in the shower of sparks to collect them. make some thermite

When collecting metal shavings, loose screws, any metal hardware that is too small or too pointy to handle easily, remember to Stop and Think.

Wrap your magnet in a double-layer of inverted plastic zip bags, cover the plastic in some aluminum foil if dealing with hot sparks. When you are done collecting you simply (slowly, carefully) pull the bags back the right way round to collect all the material (foil can be picked out easily)

Now you have everything collected And you don't have to worry about a magnet studded in pointy screws or covered in gritty filings that never clean off.

My dad makes knives from last Springs and it seems 90% of the labor is spent reducing the thickness with a grinder unfortunately. He gave me some advice about it once. Use some calipers or some other jig/form to constantly check the thickness. It's easy to get lulled by the continuous grinding and go just a little too thin in one spot and then the whole thing is fucked.

well, you could do it in about 2 hours with a 2" x 72" 2hp belt linisher with something like Cubitron II 60 grit belts.

But a linisher like that will set you back $1000.

So my advice would be spend $10 on 3.5mm or 1/8th inch thick 5160 steel plate instead.

OP stated "Preferably without heat tempering?" - which rather indicates that he doesnt want to do anything that will throw the existing HT on it. It'd rather take a miracle to forgework it without frying the temper, and even if that doesnt matter, getting an even distal is a headache.

The other version is to put your magnet inside a metal coffee can, right on the bottom. Do the collecting on the bottom of the can, then reach into the can and pull the magnet out to let the shavings/screws drop into the scrap can/storage container.
