Any other anons here blacksmiths? I'd like to know what kind of forge you have, particularly if you made it yourself. Same goes with anvils. What kind of area do you live in? I live in the borderline ghetto and would like to get some ideas on where I can actually do some forging without dipshits calling the fire department or something.

i made a "forge" with a bucket of cement, stove pipe in the center, hole on either side for oxygen, and resting a crucible in the center and filling with charcoal. cant answer anything for you as it is meh tier and took an hour just to melt 10 cans

Coke forge, air feed from a squirrel cage blower. Bought the plate steel, pickup up an old drum brake drum, fabricated the rest and re-purposed a small work table for the stand.

anvil is your average hundred weight modern thing.

drilled a pritchet hole recently, had to use a tungsten carbide bit, cost a pretty penny.

This makes me wonder why anvils are shaped the way they are. What's the purpose of that horn on the front?

Of course the back of it is fashioned that way to take blows and withstand heat, but wouldn't a simple block do the trick?

also you generally want the anvil warmed up a bit otherwise it just sucks all the heat from whatever you're working on. I have a lump of plate steel I pop in the forge while it heats up and then lay it on the anvil face to heat it up before forging.

For an anvil a use a piece of railroad, works for now, i saw some dude on YT giving it the horn shape, im currently thinking on trying it

For a forge, i use a brake drum

I'm thinking about trying get a big block of high carbon steel and machining it at my school. But our heat treating furnaces don't work at the moment so I wouldn't be able to anneal it first and I'd probably spend a fortune just on cutters.

I gave a 138 pound Peter Wright anvil, a champion 400 blower, and a forge made from an old grill lined with refractory. Works well and the anvil is wonderful, such rebound, much ring. You railfags are missing out...

Generally, unless you pay extra, steel will come in normalized or annealed form, which shouldn't be too difficult to cut. That being said, anvils are large, so you will be wearing out inserts just due the sheer size in addition to the hardness. It likely won't be very worth it money-wise as compared to buying a used anvil. But if you want to do it just to do it, don't let me stop you. Lots of stuff I did back in machining school was probably not worth it from a strictly time/money standpoint, but was fun and educational.

Ordered a whitlox wood fired forge today. Need to sort out anvil... seems blacksmithing and knifemaking are very popular now. Anvils are like $4/lb on ebay! I'm going to try to find something suitable from a scrap yard or mold+die shop, maybe 30-80 lb. I plan on making helicopter rotors and wristwatches. Just kidding. Pointy O1 for wood cutting. Mostly trying to use up copious amounts of wood from the wood shop.
