Should I try to build an extreme AA battery charger /diy/? Any tips on how I would go about it?

I can purchase a 15-minute charger with fans to cool the batteries, but what I'm thinking is, how much faster would I be able to charge them if I jacked up the current and increased the cooling? Good idea or no? Am I mental?

Elektor electronics published a schematic for quick charger a long time ago. I don't remember if it was supposed to charge batteries in 15, 10 or 5 minutes, but more than a charger, it was a battery cooker.
Google might be able find the schematic (it was quite simple), but I won't recommend on building it.

Even though your idea works on paper, the thing is that the batteries are actually made of a real material. A real material that has a mass, and a specific heat, and a temprature gradient radiating from the lowest resistance path through the cell.

Unless your cooling the batteries with liquid nitrogen (in which case you would break them in a different way) then there is no way to cool inner materials in the cell fast enough. It's like putting a pot of boiling water in an ice bath: it will cool down eventually, just not as fast as you thought.

Think of it this way. What happens when you pour ice water in to an empty but already hot coffee pot? The bigger the temp difference, the more likely it is to shatter. Charging a battery faster (and making it hot) then cooling it more aggressively is much worse for the battery than charging it slowly and never exposing it to extreme heat or cold.

You could use a peltier cell to cool the batteries. the batteries could seat in a metal battery holder with a peltier cell under it. the peltier needs to be cooled tho.
you could make a sandwich out of this idea with two half holders and two peltiers.

Peltier coolers aren't nearly as effective as you think

Op you need to get a mineral oil bath with full radiator pump system

The batteries will be oily when you take them out but you may be able to charge them in seconds
