Hey /diy/ computer fag here, I got an assignment a few months ago to work on about 3 dozen workstations. At the time I had a coworker who lent me a power drill that was sensitive enough or whatever that I could drill a screw straight into the motherboard mounts and it didn't damage the board. I spaced on it at the time and now the guy is gone, can anyone help me identify what this was? Budget isn't really an issue I just don't even know how to look for an electronics sensitive power drill

Any low-power electric drill would work. Just set the torque to the lowest setting. Torque is usually set on a collar just behind the chuck.

An electric screwdriver might be good, too, if you can find one that will last longer than a few minutes without recharging.

Right on, I hadn't even considered an electric screwdriver. Do you have any recommend brands or models? I really don't know who would and wouldn't be expected to produce quality tools for anything that has electricity running through it

if you use an electric screwdriver people will consider you queer. might not be a problem for you just letting you know.
if you are screwing screws into motherboards then literally any battery drill with a torque setting will do fine but it might be a bit bulky for waving about inside a case.

Alright same question then, what's the cordless drill to have for this application? My exposure to tools is limited just to a few hand tools(and a soldering kit) used for electronics, which doesn't put a ton if wear on tools compared to some other pursuits. I don't mind digging around on Google, but I've been having a hard time digging up definitive results for either tool

Do it right....use a small, hand powered (non-electric) drill, a good sharp bit, drill pilot hole, screw in screw.

Electric is too big and bulky, more than you need, could easily cause damage, etc. You dont even need a hand drill, you could just use a sharp drill bit and twist with fingers. A hand drill will be much easier though.

They also make bit holders specifically designed to hold the bit, so you can spin it with your fingers. Kind of like a jewelers screwdriver.

I was gonna suggest this, but I don't know what they're called. That would give you more control than any electric, and especially more than your standard electric.

I don't even know how you could use a regular sized drill for this, I've always had to use a special kit of small hand drivers that my IT dad had lying around.

Same here, I use small jewelers or "precision" drivers. Im not risking damage with electric. I have a very nice, interchangable bit precision driver kit.

I misread OPs post (was at hospital with my new baby, so distracted). I thought OP wanted to drive screws through circuitboards, when he was talking about driving screws through pre-existing holes for mounts. Sorry OP.

Check this, OP. The current-limited torque control is really nice, snaps to a sharp stop and wont keep banging like the spring-ball torque collars on bigger drill/screwdrivers.

I've used mine up to rack-mount screws. If someone has used a big hand to tighten them, this will be just a bit shy, but manages 99% of time. At the lighter end the torque stop is very sensitive. Should be perfect for PC building.

I believe phillips makes an identical driver. (and possibly someone else, branded, but i forget.)
