Really? I almost solely buy torx screws for when I'm doing woodwork. Torx is much better for high torgue situations and since its flat in the front, it wont push the bit out when you put too much momentum on it.

they design shit with phillips (mostly consumer electronics) for casuals and because phillips knows no metric so it doesn't matter the thread pitch/type . they then use torx for the parts of the consumer product they dont want casuals to fuck with.

hex will always be king of kings, and they use it for real ass stuff like machines that matter, not some consumer shit toaster or printer/

slotted screws for for shit that needs highest tightening force with a limited area that might go inside the part, shit like pipe clamps and band heaters still use slot n, but are also using phillips and outside hex to boot. its not uncommon to see a slot on something as a combo hex/phillips/slot that has a potential to strip the heads of the fisrt 2 types

But they don't cam out. They strip the screw. Which makes the fit and finish look like shit and the screw useless for maintenance. You can't ever re-close a tool or panel once the screw is stripped.

If you are doing assembly, get a clutch.

If you're using that much torque, chances are your screw isn't a philips anyway: almost all "philips" screws in construction are in fact Pozidriv, which is like Philips, but without the curved surfaces that make it cam out.

I work on heavy hydraulics and 97% of all fasteners used are hex head (internal or external). Very rarely Torx and some 12 point. Hex head is best.

hex are all around the best. you have the option of using a wrench or a driver on a power tool. if it's totally wrecked, you can cut new flat sides into a head and grab it with vice grips. hex head is the best option when dirt/rust is expected (e.g., outdoors or wet locations). every other head type becomes completely unusable.

i really like torx. i like the way it doesn't cam out when using a power tool. when using hand tools, torx don't round off like allens do.

robertson can fuck off, and so can most pozidrive/phillips. flat head is fucking obnoxious to deal with and i throw them out and replace them with something sane at every opportunity.

pretty common for flat pack but its more that its cheaper to send out a free hex key than it is to send out a free screwdriver with every unit sold. i dont see torx replacing philips though, smaller bites = easier to strip = less valuable to anyone doing large scale fabrication

Here's my two cents from practical experience, no theoretical bullshit.
The small torx heads, T10 and anything bleow, slip like motherfuckers. I don't enjoy using T15 usually too.
The bigger ones, T20 and anything bove that will basically never slip and are quite ideal.

The small ones will destroy a cheap drill bit pretty fast using a power tool.

All screws should be slotted and all bolts should be square fuck all this complicated bullshit. I have a vintage chainsaw where every single screw on it is flathead and guess what? I can take the entire fucking thing apart with one screwdriver, by hand. The more facets you put on a bolt the easier it is to round it off, and the harder it is to fabricate tools when the fancy ones designed by people with their thumbs up their ass don't fit.

cool as fuck stove though... ebayed nos parts... got it running again.. will probably outlast anything not made by viking in the last decade....
also for those saying torx won't hold up to dirt... I find they don't do as bad as phillips... not as good as sheet metal screws, but I've found them serviceably good after spending a decade living in a dishwasher sump assembly...

did some roofwork, aka new roof for a garden shed/house. they gave us screws which were outside hex, used to fasten the sheet metal to the wooden frame. all hex. never once had a camout or even a slip of the screw. 10/10 would hex again.
