Diatoms are a type of algae. Diatomists were artists who arranged them into interesting patterns under a microscope. It's a completely dead art unless it's gone through a very recent revival I'm unaware of.

No real revival that I can find but I have a pretty good microscope and was reading up on how to clean diatoms without destroying their silica shells, mounting them properly and collecting a sample of them. The only thing I really don't understand is how you would be able to manipulate them well enough to produce patterns like pic related. I feel like i'm overlooking some basic way to do it
