What kind of optics do I need to make a VR device from a 4k monitor? I understand it will have to be some kind of periscope because of the interocular distance?

I'm looking to do the same thing as oculus does with a mobile display but with bigger PC monitor I have.

yes, it will still cost thousands of dollars.
the drivers suck, your framerate will be in the single digits@4k, you have to sit in the hot spot and wear dork shades. every part of VR is expensive and crap.

So you want to walk around with a giant monitor strapped to your head? Wouldn't that be kinda heavy?

Or do you just want 4k in 3D. In which case you should buy some stereoscopic glasses and the hardware driver to run it.

To run VR in Blender Game Egnine. You throw the output window on the monitor and ALT+F11 to maximize.

You mount the oculus on the rig and use it for tracking but not for displaying. DK2s will become dirt cheap after the consumer version comes out.

You make a box like a typical VR headset but for a monitor. If the lens have to be in the middle of the each half of the screen you make smoething like a periscope to bring the output from the lenses closer each other so it matches your inter-ocular distance.

So essentially you have something like a periscope that you can move around with two handles and view things in VR. Not as convenient as oculus but MUCH higher resolution.
