i made a primitive nes zapper to usb interface. haven'
t tested it thoroughly yet .
no pics, its at work.

simply a keyboard controller taken from a broken keyboard
with the matrix connections for S and P connected by optocouplers.
optocoupler's diodes are powered when their cathodes are pulled to ground by the trigger's switch / sensor circuits open collector output.

plan to make a primitive shooting game with gamemaker.
theoretically possible, at least.

I've been doing a lot of work with zappers myself lately. I'll give you some tips so you don't have to figure this stuff out yourself:

The light sensing circuit will not respond to a lightbulb or a static white CRT monitor. It's been designed to eliminate this kind of cheating by requiring a flash lasting a specific period. This period is controlled by the 1nF capacitor. I found that by completely removing it the gun would respond to any bright CRT pixels but not lightbulbs. I'm assuming this set the flash period high enough that the invisible CRT flicker was enough to pass.

The trigger has an interesting mechanical system that only closes the switch momentarily as it's being pulled back. This means you can't set up something like an autofire while the trigger is held. There's a small piece of plastic you can cut away to make it behave like a normally open pushbutton.

Did this the past couple of weeks.

Waiting for the top PCB to arrive (black part).

It is a DC/DC converter, that inputs 48V and outputs 10-80V.

Nope, all is assembled manually, some parts are soldered with an oven.

Nut everything is hand picked and placed.

The "big" pcb is the main converter, it covers 5 x 5cm or ~2 x 2"..

The smaller one is 5 x 1.88cm, this is an auxiliary converter for +/-5V

is there a datasheet for the SIL sharp IS somewhere?

I'd like to not modify the zapper in any way, I've already gutted a zapper to make a laserpistol before, I'd like not to mess to much with this one.

AFAIK:
duckhunt has 1 frame of complete blackness and checks for light( to catch a cheater pointing at another light).
then it flashes target hit boxes for 1 frame, one at a time.

You can get tall mini pushbuttons, looks like the longer ones might have the reach you need. If not I have had success packing material under the switch to lift its height, then extending its legs with offcut component leads so it reaches the through hole. Get some thin ply or perspex, cut it into a shape that will sit under the buttons without getting in the way of the button pins, away you go.

LED's can also be mounted high easily enough, cut a small rectangle of non conductive material, stand it up between the PCB and the base of the LED between its pins, then wrap the whole thing in heatshrink to stop the rectangle from coming out. This will ensure the LED does not disappear beneath the panel if you accidentally press down on it while handling the unit.

I have a few of them, they're pretty fragile. I think I might glue something to the top of them to make them longer.

Also,I may dessolder the LEDs, put headers where they are and put the leds in the case with a holder like this

Longpost mini switches? As long as their tops are protruding through the panel they will be fine, they are great at taking straight-in forces (like being pressed) but they ill fold sideways in a second if the tops aren't reinforced by the panel. You should be fine.
