Hi /diy/ im currently interested in building a music box from scratch, I understand how they work by now, but google just dump me with silly tutorials that told me to buy the mechanism done. If any of you can actually help me with adivces or ideas about the crafting of it? Or maybe any other options for a begginer in this? Im particulary interested on building the mechanism

I also saw someone on youtube with a slightly simpler version, possibly? where instead of the xylophone hammers and wooden pegs, they had a finger piano and holes drilled for brad nails to pluck them.

The real issue with music boxes is setting the tune. the cheap ones are great, they just stamp out a tune on sheet metal and wrap it around the drum, but that would take SO many tries to get right if I did it.

If you want to make it automatic, you're pretty much going to have to salvage clockwork from a watch or something. pendulum clock is a maybe, if you want to have a chime kind of thing for a clock, but spring clock is crazy hard and I wouldn't tackle it until well versed in it, and had the easier problems solved.

What do you mean by automatic ? Automatic running once the spring is armed ? You want it to start at a specific time of the day ?

Then you'll want something Like an Europa alarm clock. Cheap ,reliable etc... You just have to tweak it to run the music box instead of the ring.

Speed will be an issue tho. A fan might be needed if you want to slow down the gears.
