i suggest asking for a T8 type light with a high output ballast at your local ahrdware store

Bit of advice... Unplug the thing before handling the bulb, otherwise keep your dick beaters away from the metal caps. I got shocked with one of those once while my other hand was touching the grounded metal cover of the fixture and I still can't get the memory of that sensation out of my head 20yrs later. I've been shocked with higher voltages at lower amperage, lower voltage at higher amperage, had an arc go right through my thumbnail, tossed 4' and knocked unconscious by a reverse-wired pole pig... And still, the fluorescent ballast is by far my least favorite of all.

Just wondering...what do these offer compared to LEDs? Cuz it certainly isn't light quality or longevity.

Installation cost and price of replacement bulbs. Before LEDs they lasted longer and cost less to operate then anything else out there too. If you needed to light a larger area and wanted to do it as cheaply as possible, both up front and in years to come, they were the best option. Times change.

These are superior in so far as the lamp does not flicker during startup or operation, the efficiency is better and the tube lasts longer. You know these ping-ping-ping-bzzzt sounds from movies when they switch on the lights in a crappy warehouse or a godforsaken bunker? That's what normal ballast does. Electronic ballast: A bit more expensive, but well worth it.

Very few hobbyist are willing to put LED setups in their planted aquariums. You get better light from T18s or HPS but HPS is more for saltwater
