I need to make a handful of these prop wands.
I'm doing it by hand so i can't carve them with a lathe, I'm using a knife and chisel

Resources: Dowel rods, 2 sizes of sandpaper, Stain and finish

I need to do this cheaply and accurately. Any tips? matching up the stain. I don't know what type of wood this one is made of so i have to guess.

I love stationary that is ladled in a no nonsense style.

For matching the stain, just stain them all at the same time.

Another tip is set up a production line: break the process up in to sections, do each sections for all the wands at the same time.

I have 2 and a half months to make like five. so i don't need a production line or anything.

The important part is that they stay accurate to the one i posted, and without spending more than $25 on each one.

Should i use a rag to apply the stain? and any easy ways to carve small inner details like the one at the 5 inch section of my image?

Yep cloth is a good method.

Apply it liberally.
The longer the stain is left on, the deeper and richer the colour will be. So time it carefully and make a note if you're not doing all the wands at the same time.
Remove the excess stain with a dry cloth, wiping in the direction of the wood grain.

I've never used cheese cloth, I just use any clean rag.

Clear finish, you mean like a varnish? A spray Lacquer is quick a popular method. Spray first coat, allow to dry, lightly sand, spray second.

And to carve, I don't do wood carving sadly.
I'd be inclined to use different sized round and half round files. Clamp the dowel from one end, then file out the basic shape, then go over it with a very sharp knife. Then sand and add the finish.

Why?

This is less than an hour's work on a lathe.

If they're props, why do they need to be accurate?

If you want to be cheap, for something like this since accuracy isn't actually important and the stock is small. You could just chuck the dowels up on a drill press and use it as a ghetto lathe.

Just get some dowel rods from Home Depot.

Measure how long you want each to be.

Figure out how many dowels to buy.

Cut them to size.

Wipe stain on them with an old t-shirt cut up into 7x7 inch squares.

I would recommend applying some finish on top of the stain. You can see what Home Depot has in stock. Since it's a toy/prop I would buy something cheap.

Try pic related. One can should be enough for your project. But make sure to spray it lightly because it will run (see: drip)

When in doubt: read the instructions.

The proper handtool for the job is a draw knife or spokeshave, it won't turn out well with a normal knife unless you're REALLY practices and using green wood. Hell, green wood would be far easier in general than carving dry hardwood dowels

I've seen a video before of a japanese puppet maker, he put a straight wooden stick on a motor and rotated it around its vertical axis.
then he carved out the shape while it is rotating and the result was a symmetrical object.
i can imagine this would work perfectly for wands and would speed up the process + make it look beautifully acurate.

So i got a mock one carved up and i'm ready to stain it.

after staining should i use lacquer or Varnish? the original given to me has a like a plasticy glossy feel to it.
