headphone tabletop DAC/AMP

hello /diy/

i am looking to build a tabletop DAC/AMP running off of 120 to drive some 32ohm rated grado headphones.

ive looked at the odac, cmoy and the o2.

but here is the rub.... i want the dac to have a toslink/optical in.

does anyone know of any place to find plans online or jumping off points?

Toslink is dead. Your equipment should have a digital out.

All the things you've looked at are just amplifiers.

If you want your "DAC/AMP" to be able to take input from a digital transport, you'll have to put a DAC in it.

Two minutes in Google found http://sound.westhost.com/project85.htm , a DAC/AMP circuit that seems to do exactly what you want.

If you want TOSLINK instead of S/PDIF, you'll need to add a toslink receiver: these accept a TOSLINK plug and output S/PDIF at TTL level. They can do this so easily because TOSLINK and S/PDIF are the same protocol, just over different media.

If you're having trouble finding one, you can get a soundcard off ebay with a TOSLINK in and scavenge it. There are also dedicated TOSLINK-to-S/PDIF dongles; all you need off them is the TOSLINK port.

Also, it looks like the CS8414 DDC should interface directly into the DAC in the ODAC, but that's just from a 60 second read of the datasheets.
