I've been cutting my hair for about 5 years before about 2 weeks ago. The reason I did it in the first place is because I had only been to places like Great Clips and had a bad time (and because I was kinda cheap). For the first couple years it was pretty shitty but after that I got pretty good to the point where I was ok with my hair, except for the back of my head. Eventually it just got too tiring with the cleanup and stress of not fucking up, it only looked decent about 15-20% of the time, and I hated sitting in front of people because I feared they might see how uneven the back of my head was.
Two weeks ago I just thought fuck it, looked for local professional barbers, checked one of their websites and saw their customers' cuts and liked them. Got over having to put a couple of handsome guys on my phone, shelled out the $20 and showed my barber what sort of haircut I was aiming for. I talked more specifically what I wanted during the cut and that was that. Feels really fucking good now. I don't have to worry about cutting my hair and it actually looks decent for the first time in several months.
Sorry OP, but I'm gonna have be one of "those" people and say just go to a professional. I just don't think cutting your own hair is worth it, unless you have above average hair cutting skills and a friend who would be willing to do the back for you. It's really easy to have a vision in your head of what you want your hair to look like and then think "oh I just need to snip right here and there and it'll be perfect, how hard can this be?" but unfortunately I feel it's little more complicated than that. It's just not worth fucking up and looking autistic, put a fucking picture on your phone and show someone who knows what they're doing.
