its faster to adjust the tightness this way, so factories do this with the fact that they will be tried on over and over. if you wear it this way there is greater stress on the eyelets

Right, I see it on many more shoes than just geos. Look at any mid-to-high-end shoe - chances are, they will be laced like this. Always wondered about it, though.
