First, pick a martial art you want to MASTER. Fuck self defense, if you're really worried about being attacked get a gun, but 99% of fights are avoidable if you're not a mouth breathing retard. You do not want to get into a street fight. EVER. Pick a martial art that interests you, be it BJJ, judo, taekwondo, muay thai, Kung fu, or taichi
After that, look for places in your area and drop by. Don't call ahead, just walk in.
>how does the instructor talk to you?Is he a coach or a sensi? If he speaks in ancient Chinese secrets do a 360 and walk the other way
>watch a black belt classHis is where you want to be, theoretically. Does what they do look interesting? Do they work out in a way that seems effective? When (and every black belt class should do this) they practice with each other, are they compliant and just fall over with no resistance? When they spar, how hard do they go? This should look like the "real deal", guys should get hit, even excessively so. You don't want a place that pussyfoots black belt class. Also, if there's kids anywhere in that class gtfo, you don't want that shit
