I actually out 2k'd the best rower in the school with six weeks of 6x500m/1:00r three times a week and then a 2k.
I literally don't know how I had the mental toughness to do that without external encouragement. I'd literally run out and pour hose water on my legs to cool down from the absurd pump/lactic burn. Three times a week!!
And then the two/three weeks I left for uni and start rowing, I did a 2k erg every day. Literally Bulgarian programming for 2k. Started at something like 6:58, dipped down to 7:03 after two days and then linearly dropped to 6:35
In the words of my future coach, when he read my email explainign what I'd done (He'd suggested I do some aerobic work) "No, no, no, but yes!" (as in, oh god, we have a talented psychopath coming.)
