I guarantee you that there are at least a couple of people in this very thread who would never bother picking up a weight again in their lives if they had to do something equivalent to what I said.
The notion that people are perfectly rational entities capable of deciding perfectly well what they want to do with their lives, and how they do it, and that they have an INVIOLABLE RIGHT AND FREEDOM to do so, is a relatively recent development in Western libertarian thought, derived from Enlightenment values, and is totally missing in other cultures and periods of history.
Because of this more or less delusional piece of vanity on democracy's part, you have a situation where god knows how many potential Schwarzeneggers, Beethovens, Hemingways, etc are wasted, because they spend their time on something they choose to do that isn't in their best interests.
But hey, at least it's their choice!
