Excercised daily from a young age in callisthenics, wrestling and a wide array of weaponry. A hirdman was required to own a sword or an axe, a shield, a spear, a helmet and armor. In fighting in Norse communities was common as Wergild (blood oath between families) was law.

Vikings also competed regularly in swordplay (called Holmgång) and Glima wrestling. In addition, Hirdmen were all proficent seamen and their ships were partly driven by each warrior grabbing an oar and rowing.

Vikings also enjoyed a diet high in fish and vegetables. Although their main source of carbohydrates (turnips) were rather poor compared to the potatoes that would become a mainstain in scandinavian diets post 1500's.

All in all, a run of the mill Viking would be very fit and expected to keep his body in good shape. If they faltered in this, this would be frowned upon by their feudal lords, the chieftains of the land (and later the kings).

In addition, the pezhetairoi were trained in pankration. This was the ancient worlds version of a "no rules, close combat fighting" and featured grapples, punches, wrestling, kicking, balls grabbing - you name it.

Their diet wasn't impressive while on the march, most of their food intake was reduced to a rich amount of olives (fat) and bread (carbohydrates) but they would eat oxen, goats and other fat meats whenever they could get their hands of them. Thanks to their conquests, this was fairly often but probably not enough to outweigh the fact that they fought and marched non-stop for 11 years.

Were they the most /fit/? Probably not as their diet wouldn't support it. Were they the most bad ass, veteran soldiers ever to see the light of day? Quite possibly, yes.

A warrior who eats a lot (like knights, vikings etc) is much healthier and stronger than someone who is starving. They dislocate their shoulders or get a bone fracture from just trying to block a swing. Also, when you put your whole mass into a swing, size matters. Ancient battles were mostly pure brawls, not fancy fighting like in the movies. Duels didn't last minutes, they lasted a few seconds.

The pelopennesian war was the big exception.

Also they were sitting on a ticking time bomb of a pretty resentful, cohesive slave population that outnumbered them by quite a lot (about 5-10:1 depending on who you asked and what time period you referenced) so a lot of their time was spent on police actions, murder of any uppity (or just intelligent or headstrong) helots, and patrols to prevent the helots from organizing.

Eventually thebes and their sacred band (of faggots, literally) lead a charge to free the helots, who established two (walled) cities, megalopolis and something else, that hemmed in the Spartan state and served as a place for helots to flee to.

No it doesn't.

Vik = Inlet or bay

Viking means one who lives by/from the bay. I.e., a seafarer. Not necessarily a raider. Vikings travelled for a variety of reasons. To raid was one of those but to barter was just as a common practice.

SS and Wehrmacht are two different animals and respective high ranks basically hated each other (one being the new power of party members the other one being the one of old aristocracy).

Waffen-SS were almost mostly fanatical volunteers, while Wehrmacht were normal citizens serving during wartime (yeah, I know it's not so black and white, but still.. ).

But the Wehrmacht was actually the army, air force and navy combined into one. The name of the army was the Heer.

The OKW was the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht and thus controlled all three of Nazi Germany's stately armed forces.
