Generally, exercise is extremely encouraged for degenerative injuries, as indeed strengthening muscles in that area can reduce stress and pain
You should get in touch with a (good!!) physiotherapist, these kinds of injuries aren't exactly uncommon and when you are restricted in what kinds of exercises you can do they can recommend acceptable ones
If they have access to your chart/xray images they can help you further, I agree with the above poster that there's a lot more information of interest other that "disc disease"
Painkillers aren't your enemy btw. Pain causes tension and possibly reduced blood flow, you'll be less active and exercise less, being weak will require killers longer etc
Slowly reducing them (especially morphine/opiates) is great but if you're in pain, you need them
