Add volume, and spread training a bit. I was stalling at 1pl8 x 5, couldn't complete my 5x5s.

On boring but big now. Having a day set aside specifically for ohp, with a volume day complementing it, has helped a lot.

Your Triceps are your secondary muscle for any Press. People tend to forget this. Do isolated Tricep exercises: Tricep Extensions, Skull Crushers etc. Guarantee you'll see progress with Bench and Overhead/ Military Press.

That's because The Press isn't as popular as it once was, so low standards for The Press over time ended up being considered impressive. You should onsider a bodyweight The Press a minimum standard for being strong.

Anyway strength standards aren't very useful when when talking about how lifts compare to each other. Some people legitimately even have a nedlift lower than their squat with proper training. Don't worry. As long as you can The Press qt girls you're alright. Bench press isn't as nice as The Press anyway.

yesss, It's easier to add reps when you are doing more,
1st. lower the weight to something you can barely get 8 reps
2nd. next week you see how it goes maybe add one rep
3rd. keep adding reps until you can do around 12/15
4th. add more weight and go back to eight reps
then just repeat the process, it gets way easier to add reps and weight by training like this

Not that guy, but i also went from SS to 531, and it just doesn't work.

I found keeping my working sets at the same weight (per week or month) works a lot better than the 531 loading scheme, which is just too slow.

The best part about 531 is the BBB volume sets----those really do add weight to your total.

I've got loads of help from Justin's OHP fix video, but now I've been noticing that creating a moment arm between the bar in my hands and my wrist helps me push the weight up easier as opposed to pressing with a strict straight wrist position. What do? Any problems pressing this way until I reach 1plet OHP?

What I did is 3 sets strict press 2 sets push press (with higher weight). You can use more and more leg drive each time you can do "cheat" reps and totally fatigue your shoulders.

Slap on your 5RM and make these changes:
>grip shoulder width or slightly outside
>suicide grip
>feet same width as grip, toes slightly out
>brace
>spread the floor
>extend hips slightly
>breathe when the rep is done, repeat
>hit rep PR

Most people who can't progress have form issues. The people who have reached the point where they need to periodize to get progress shouldn't be having form issues. Evaluate your form and if it really is on point, switch programming for OHP. I've found that 5/3/1 is the best to progress on OHP because you're not pushing your limits for a while but you are still progressing. Slow progression is the best for it.

It depends one where you are in terms of weight and what you already do in this press, so I'll give some generic tips.

>Tuck your thumb and go suicide grip for OHP - it changes your bar path.
>Train lats on the same plain you press, i.e. closegrip pulldowns
>Train triceps directly
>Do dumbbell powercleans and follow them up with band pullaparts or facepulls.

Most of these tips also carry over to the bench, I'm another one of those people who is great at OHP comparative to my other pressing movements, so maybe it'll take longer for you to progress than it did for me.

It's you form bro and or lack of proper accessories to your lift. Just do a lot of shoulder, back and triceps variation lifts. Also squeeze your ass and take a deep breathe before going up with your chest up. The grip width will be determined by your body type and or current muscles so you gotta play with it. I noticed the closer in you go the easier it is for me to bang out fast reps but it makes it harder to start out the bottom on your first rep and locking out is a bitch at max rep because of the longer range of motion. So recently I moved my hands out slightly and it's made a good difference in strength and control through out the entire motion.

I've found that making it a very quick power movement makes it a lot easier.

Push press is a great lift to do after your work sets on Press for the same reason. They might not help you exactly build muscle like a very controlled rep would, but they get you much more comfortable under the bar.

Prolly delts. Add some push presses and do this: load the barbell with more weight than you OHP and try to press it. It won't get much higher than your starting position but keep pressing for 3-4 seconds and then get back to the starting position, rinse and repeat

No, scapular retraction is not advised on overhead presses.
The scauplae shouldn't be protracted nor retracted.
They should move freely (rotation) in the movement.
If it feels bad, you should probably see a PT and ask them.
It could be a wide number of reasons why it's happening.
