The only thing flat barbell bench press ever did for me was fuck up my shoulders. I've only hit incline and decline bench for the past 4 years and my chest looks so much better and my rotator cuffs have healed nicely.

Im going to guess people associate the term flat bench with how your body is supposed to be. If you lay on the bench like a stick and pump your arms up and down you'll hurt all kinds of shit and never press as much as you can with proper form.
