I finally got the hang of this benching, but still no matter what I try squatting it feels like the bar wants to roll around on my back a little

Better than a few months ago though. Flipping through my camera today I watched some old videos of my squats and I was folding up every rep. I'm still pretty horizontal but at least I don't actively fold into a curve anymore

Let's talk Sumo

Chatted with Marc the other day, commented on his quite minimally outward foot angle, I've always been under the impression that more outward = more better.

Anyway, tried a more reserved angle, maybe about 35-40degrees and it felt super. Much more torque in the hips, actually felt glutes being engaged. Obviously, being a new thing, I was a bit weaker, but broke the floor a lot quicker and more smoothly. Oddly, I felt my hips were actually closer to the bar than before, which doesn't really make sense but whatever.

Any idea why? I was just thinking recently that an almost exaggerated outward foot angle is one of the only things that helps me maintain external rotation while squatting.

Depends why you're doing it tbh. Controlled descent with slight pause at the bottom enforces max tightness. Drop and reset gives you more practice setting up.

Having your feet at an extreme angle could open you up to having knees come forward and weight shift to the inside of the foot. I try to pull with feet 45 degrees.

He still said to descent fairly quickly the tip was to descend the same way you want to lift the weight, to further ingrain the pattern. He was basically calling me out for throwing the weight forward on my descent which you see a lot of people do.

Yeah that's something I didn't mention. Having more outward foot angle isn't really as testing of your hip external rotation ability, it's more that your thighs are following where your knees are going. (Obviously hip flexibility is still required).

I would suggest (Though not say this is right) starting with very outward foot angle and learning to externally rotate feet, but slowly angle them in over time when you're comfortable with the ext rotation. Though this is only if for whatever reason you think that less rotation is worth going for. If very rotated works well for you, stick with it.

Unlike DL, I find it hard to get my knees out when squatting, even if I use a DL stance. Not sure why that is, possibly slightly more upright torso.

I don't think any of what I just wrote was legible. Oh well.

That's about the situation I'm in. Stick with what I know is strong, or make what seems right stronger.

And the same problem I had when deciding to continue roundback conventional or go sumo.

Sumo a fickle bitch tbh.

This is why I think it's comparable to the snatch and benefits by training similar to it. Practice practice, not just ball to the walls rip and grip.

Yeah for sure, I seemingly need every technique practice variation of the lift to figure it out. Pause off the floor or by knees taught me to setup, starting to figure out how to do glute lockouts via block pulls and so forth.

Seriously took me a year of sumo to learn how to get hips closer/back straighter without making the hams slack which is what fucked me before

Might not be tight hamstrings. Are you properly hinging? I was reading (In a Yoga book!!!!) how taking a big breath hallows more torso rigidity when hinging at the hips rather than just relying on the muscles to do the work.

Yeah fam. At the moment I'm working on my squat-related mobility. Sitting in a 3rd world squat for some minutes every day and it's definitely helping my adductors loosen up. Something else in my hip is reeeally tight all the time, think it's piriformis, so I've been doing stretches for that too.

I did yoga twice a week for a year but I don't think it helped much, since the instructor didn't go out of her way to make corrections, and it wasn't terribly PL-specific.

My hamstrings have never felt tight, but maybe I just get around hamstring tightness by having long arms

Probably because you're not bracing your abs right. Having a little trouble finding it but there's a JTS video with Dr Quinn Henoch PhD that explains it pretty well. Arching your back/not bracing your abs will artificially 'tighten' your hamstrings.

as for the lunge, I prefer to put an unloaded bar on my back and just get into the deepest lunge I can with an upright torso, hold for 10 seconds, switch, repeat a couple of times until I'm mobile. His groin stretch is OK but there are lots of ways to do that one.

I think hip mobility is important but in most people you'll mostly be restricted by the hip flexors and groin, get those loose and after that the main problem will probably be glutes and ankles.

You shouldn't need to spend more than 10 minutes getting mobile, and more than 5 minutes at the end of the workout prolonging those flexibility gains

I'd start off light with some higher reps and sets, and gradually work back to were you should be over a week or two, or longer if you cant lift for a while

I'd do the same, start light at 15-20 reps, jogg something and then lower gradually to 3-4-5-6-7-8 reps
