how to prepare lentils?

I soaked them for a couple of hours and then boiled them, they are kinda gross tbh

black peppercorn, bay leaves, cayenne pepper and cumin.

Before boiling them cut up and fry some onions and red peppers inside the pot you'll boil them in. Don't forget to salt them.

why are people on /fit/ such cooking fucking illiterates. Food is only as good as the seasoning and levels of flavours you put into it. Play around with different spices and herbs and see what you enjoy.

Doesn't need to be soaked

>1 cup brown or black lentils
>3 cups water
>simmer until totally soft and most of the water is gone (if they aren't soft by the time the water is gone, add more water)
>add a can of tomatoes, chopped peppers, diced onion, chili powder, and some salt

Use red lentils instead of green. They cook almost instantly, and make a great main for a soup. I add beans and what to it as well. Very nice.

you don't need to soak lentils, but you should still check for pebbles and rinse them thoroughly like you would beans

be sure to add salt to the cooking water like you would pasta. simmer for 25-30 minutes and check for texture. keep cooking if you want them to be mushier, but they should be done by then

you could also add things like onions or bacon/salt pork to the cooking water, or you could even use some chicken/vegetable broth instead of 100% water

Do NOT do this, it makes the lentils hard. Add salt after.

I know that's true with beans, although you can get past that by adding salt when soaking the beans and then cooking them in unsalted water, but I've never seen anyone say you shouldn't salt the water for lentils. the exact opposite in fact. alton brown, america's test kitchen and bon appetit all stress that you should salt the cooking water for lentils
