the people are incredibly friendly, but they've got typical midwest USA issues where every one leans absurdly far right, and every one is very similar and people that are different than them are looked at through a predetermined filter. (typical midwest USA)
There is very little economy other than tourism and agriculture, and as such very few people stay in SoDak, and the ones that do work in agriculture, construction, timber industry, welding or something similar / serving one of those industries. Lots of blue collar work.
There's a VERY large native american population, and the reservations here are a fucking mess. literally just fucked. the native american population is, as a whole, very fucked, and there's ALOT of racial tension west river because of that. middle class white people hate natives, natives LOATHE white people. (I've witnessed parents tell their children not to talk to white people unless they have to. heart breaking.)
There's also alot of Hutterite colonies (German religious colonies) east river.
Lots of cattle and ethanol plants.
There are literally thousands of towns in SoDak that have under 1000 people. My hometown had ~ 200 people in it. My graduating class had my high school not been shut down was 5 people.
Its actually the best state in the USA to start a small business (not joking), as there is an insane amount of small business help and tax breaks, and there's no state income tax which is fan-fucking-tastic.
lots of other little things to talkabout but none that are overly important.
