I've taken CCNA courses and configured a lot of Cisco routers and switches, so I know my way around IOS.

But I'm still not sure whether it'd be a better idea to go for pfSense instead. I mean, having a web interface is nice, but not a requirement.

depends on if there is already some os on that server.
If yes, simply ssh username@ip.
you should do a port forward and ddns on the router the server sits behind, if it is not directly connected to the net.

Nuke the HDD and install GNU/Linux, a real server can't run on Windows. You'll have a fuckton of problems.

Just download a simple Debian LXDE version

Well, depending on the Cisco router you get (if you decide to go that route) I do believe they have a browser interface that you can use to configure it/monitor, along with CCP (Cisco configuration professional) application you can download.

Isn't the whole point of raid to avoid dealing with potential hardware fuckups

If I go hardware the hardware RAID route I'm buying two identical cards. If the card fails, I swap it for the backup and order another, or a pair of different cards if I can't find another of the same model. It adds another point of failure but takes load off the CPU as well. Yes it is an 8 core, but it's still just an Atom with a 20W TDP, and I intend on using all the cores, so taking some load off of them with dedicated hardware seems ideal.

It's already overkill as it is, no need to go further. Plus I have no room for a rack until I move, and that's up to a year away. I'll stick with the mITX build I already have a spot picked out for.

It is for my needs. Especially after I upgrade to 32GB RAM. Plus the whole reason I'm doing this specific build is because it can fit in an mITX case. If it's not going in one, I'm not doing it.

Anon, I'm pretty content with 8GB. This is futureproofing and then some. You need to realize that what you do and the components you require for it aren't what everyone's going to do/use.

An Atom is my idea of this specific server. Purpose built for low power, a decent number of virtual machines, and to be an NAS. I'm not going to be doing anything intensive with any of the virtual machines, this setup is more than good enough. I agree going balls to the wall is fun but you don't need to do it with everything in existence.

Not that guy but how prevalent are Windows servers really? I thought Linux dominated the server market. I just can't imagine Windows as a server, it's annoying enough to deal with in regular desktop use.

I got a question for you all if you don't mind answering.
Can Apache run well on a server with 512GB of RAM, or do I have to use nginx?
Along that matter, what's a good database manager to use with the same RAM restrictions as above?

It depends. At work I manage 66 boxes now. Only 3 are Linux. Many individual application servers are Windows. You can't run SharePoint or Exchange on Linux. You can't really run AD on Linux. There are products like Zentyal that try to do both AD and Exchange on a ubuntu server but they're terrible. I know two people who tried to move to them, put serious work into it, then rolled back because the results were horrid.

The vast majority of clustered "as a service" applications are Linux. You can't do big data analytics on Windows. On the server side there's far less variation on Windows so it's easier to make things work for many people since 2008r2 has the same kernel as every other 2008r2. Linux is vastly configurable and a wonderful system but sometimes that's a boon and sometimes it's an impediment.

I see everyone talking about pfsense in router context. Does pfsense mean building a computer to serve as a router? How do I connect the phone cable into it? Is there a NIC I can buy that supports xDSL? Or maybe put the ISP shit in bridge mode?

Using it as a NAS is probably your best bet. Either that or a VM box though keep in mind unless you upgrade the CPU your not going to be able to run many VMs at an acceptable level of performance.
