It's a fucking industry standard because anyone can open it, fill in data, watch the result and then copy it into word. You can probably use anything to come up with the formulas and check it. It sacrificrices some hours of programmer efficiency but then saves ten times that in cash because way less expertise is required on the customer's/co-worker's end.
Even big consultants who know damn well that they're hiring assembly wizard ask to send them the end result in Excel so that their MBA's and whatnot can use it without a manual.
