So, I'm from /sci/ and am working on a project, but I need some help.

I have a list of 256 possible configurations of an AND, OR, and any number of NOT gates, such that it has 3 inputs. I can represent these 256 configurations with a bitstring of length 8.

How would I develop an algorithm that maps a number =< 256 to it's truth table?

Okay, I was trying to keep it short, but apparently I need to go more in-depth.

If I have 2 logic gates (either an OR or an AND) and up to 5 NOT gates, I can configure them in 256 possible ways such that there are three inputs. Each logic gate can be represented as a bit (0 = OR, 1 = AND, or the other way around), and I can configure either in one of two ways so that there are three inputs (connecting one to the bottom or the top on the other). I also can place NOT gates in any 5 positions (1 = present, 0 = absent). This is a total of 8 bits, giving me 256 (= 2^8) possible configurations.

I can represent each of these configurations as an 8-bit integer. I want to program an algorithm that when inputed an 8-bit integer, will treat it as a configuration of logic gates, and output it's respective truth table.

Okay, here, an example.
We can use the truth value "1" to represent either "present", or an AND logic gate. 0, therefore, represents either "absent" or an OR logic gate.

So I've marked out the possible positions here. Going down, and treating the final output as the last digit, we can represent the Boolean function

(x AND (y OR z))

As a single integer by my encoding scheme, in this case, 16.

Either this is over my head or such an 'algorithm' doesn't exist. The way I see it, you have to write conditions for all possible cases. You can probably cut a few corners here and there but that's probably it. Am I wrong?

Do you know how to convert it back?

It sounds like what you'll want to do is extract individual bits from your encoding scheme. Just do a right shift (yourbits >> n) to get your desired bit into the end and mask it (yourshiftedbits & 1). Then you can check whether the result is 0 or 1.

By convert it back, I mean that with no knowledge of what your gates are (your inputs that create your encoding scheme), can you convert back to your gates manually? Start from there. Once you have a reliable systematic method, then start thinking about how to code it.

If you can't do this, you have to hard code every case, but that won't be friendly if you ever want to extend your format.

Easiest way is to generate a lamdba for every possible configuration, which would take 3 inputs and return boolean.

How exactly you can combine these 7 gates into 128 possible configurations is up to you. If you know it's possible, you may get a hint to a rule that makes these configurations for you.

Alright, alright, alright, I'm getting a lot of replies, so I'll maybe simplify what I'm looking for.

instead of saying column/row vector say array
instead of starting vectors at index 1 start arrays at index 0.
instead of writing equations on paper write them on a computer
add more ()()()
