You can't downgrade from Yosemite to Mavericks and even if you could do it legitimately you'd end up having problems.
A clean fresh install of Mavericks so absolutely no trace of that garbage known as Yosemite is laying around is the one and only proper solution.
Having said that, I have a late 2008 MBA with El Capitan on it now and it uses less RAM overall than Mavericks does (and WAY FUCKING LESS than Yosemite does, that resource hogging bitch of a beast). El Capitan runs surprisingly well on a 7 year old Core 2 Duo with just 2GB of RAM - it idles at like 550MB usage, and it's very snappy and responsive.
Still not sure if I'll stick with El Capitan however as they've dumbed the OS down so much it's almost irritating to high degrees. Mavericks is still one damned fine OS and probably the best one for this old piece of hardware.
