I'm not sure I should ask this here but how do I setup a lan connection in my home. I thought I knew what I was doing but turns all I knew was completely wrong. Is it possible to get some assistance from you bros.

All you need is a common residential router. Internet goes into the WAN port, computers go into the LAN port.

I tried that. What I did was connect one end of my modem-router to a socket (I've got ether net cable going to my living room) and from the socket at the other end I connected another ethernet cable to my laptop and xbox to test shit out.

Whoa... I see your problem... that is a combo gateway, it is a router on its own... if you need more ports then all you need is a switch.

Ok.. hold on, can you access the gateway's web configuration page? If not then the gateway itself might have a problem because it should give your computers IP addresses as soon as they request one (assuming that you have not set a static one on such computers before)

Unplug the non working one to eliminate the issue. Does NOTHING work on the modem? Does the LINK light even come on on the front?

Ok... I assume your internet connection comes from the coaxial and then goes into the modem/gateway and distributes on the ethernet ports, right? Do you have a laptop so you can connect directly to the gateway?

I tested all the cables I had and made sure they were working. I connected to my laptop from the wall socket and there was a network connection but no internet. On my Xbox there was no connection whatsoever.

You are not connected to any devices. Unplug everything and plug ONE computer directly into modem port 1. If no light comes on either around the port itself or on the front of the router showing that the port is active you may have a defective modem. But this is unlikely. try different cables before you assume this as well.
Post results when you finish this.

Is your upstream light on? is it blinking?
If your still not online after trying >>51012654 and your upstream light isn't one that may be why.

Your modem firmware will not initialize DHCP or the gateway until you synchronize your upstream connection with your ISP in some cases.
